I think one of the best ways to discover what’s currently happening on Hive is through our short-form platforms like Snaps and Waves. These platforms have become my window into the daily activities of other Hivers, whether they’re sharing random thoughts, talking about new projects, or showing the games they’re currently playing.
Recently, one game kept appearing on my Snaps feed: HiveGrove.
Among the different games gaining attention on Hive right now, HiveGrove was the one that really caught my interest. So today, since I had some extra time to spare, I finally decided to explore it and find out why so many Hivers seem to enjoy it.
Before actually playing, I did a quick check of the HiveGrove account and looked through some of its game recaps. What surprised me was the growth of its player base. From what I saw, the game went from fewer than 200 players to more than 600 in roughly the past two months.
That immediately made me curious.
There must be something about this game that keeps attracting people, right?
So I jumped in.
Planting My First Tree
The first thing that caught my attention was the design. HiveGrove has this pixel-art style that somehow reminds me of the early NFT gaming era around 2017. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but I really like it. The artwork feels simple, playful, and welcoming rather than overly complicated.
Since I’m already a long-time Hive user, logging in was also very smooth. There wasn’t any confusing process that made me wonder what I was supposed to do next.
Then came the first action:
“Plant My Free Tree.”
I think this is actually a genius onboarding mechanic.
You don’t immediately have to invest anything. You’re simply given a free Seed Tree and invited to start playing. That got my foot through the door without me having to think about buying assets first.
And honestly, this was the moment when I started understanding why HiveGrove has been growing quickly.
This is exactly the kind of app that can serve as an onramp into Hive.
Getting Rewarded in HIVE
After planting my Seed Tree, the next thing I had to do was water it.
Simple enough.
But after watering it, I received a reward—and the interesting part is that the reward was HIVE itself.
Not some random Layer 2 token that a newcomer still has to learn about.
Actual HIVE.
I really like this approach because it puts Hive tokens directly into the hands of players through a simple action. Imagine someone discovering HiveGrove before knowing much about Hive itself. They play the game, water a tree, and suddenly they’re holding HIVE.
That’s a pretty interesting onboarding path.
I even shared my first watering through Snaps, which makes the experience feel connected to the wider Hive social ecosystem instead of being an isolated game.
More Than Just Growing Trees
As I explored further, I discovered the Campfire section.
This might actually be one of my favorite ideas in the game.
The Campfire gives players a place to talk, share updates, and engage with one another. Engagement can also contribute to the community side of the game, which gives people another reason to participate rather than simply logging in, watering a tree, and leaving.
Then there’s the Friends feature.
You can visit another player’s grove and help water their trees. What I like about this is that helping another player doesn’t require you to spend your Hive Power or sacrifice something valuable from your account.
It encourages interaction simply for the sake of helping someone else progress.
That fits Hive perfectly.
We already have a community built around commenting, curating, sharing, and supporting one another. HiveGrove is basically turning some of those behaviors into game mechanics.
My Grove Has Just Begun
So far, my experience with HiveGrove has been surprisingly enjoyable.
I started with one free Seed Tree, earned my first HIVE reward, posted about it on Snaps, visited another player’s grove, and checked out the Campfire.
And now I’m already curious about what happens when my tree grows to its next stage... LOL.
I can definitely see myself slowly building my grove and exploring more of what the game has to offer.
