Sunsets and Shutdowns — The REAL Economy is not so Rosy!

The financial duality of the world seems to be all around us.

It feels like almost every day I come across some business or website that is in the process of ”sunsetting” or has simply shut down; gone away.

I see far fewer new beginnings... and when I do, they are seldom pioneering anything particularly new, just parroting something that is already in the marketplace.

It stands in stark contrast to ”official” assurances that everything is going great and the economy has never been better. And there are visible and tangible signs of that, in the form of stock market returns and corporate profits and such.

But it is definitely a stark duality, because the headline picture bears little relation to how things are working out for the vast majority of people out there.

Some pundits talk a lot about the "redistribution of income," but most measures suggest that the only "redistribution" that has happened in the last 50-odd years is upwards, not downwards.

I'm no socialist railing aginst the rich, but I do know reality when I see it, and that reality makes it pretty obvious that the top of the pyramid is magnitudes better off — relatively speaking — than those nearer the bottom, or even the middle.

And when I see the announcements of sunsetting and shuttering, it's invariably to do with small organizations, not with large ones.

It just saddens me that so many small creative enterprises are losing their lives to mega-corporations with unlimited resources. Feels like any day now we'll arrive in a world where we have THE bank, and THE supermarket, and THE electric company.

Needs to be always adapting in this ever changing market.

Some countries are starting to have problems with housing because big funds are buying all the houses.

The way you pointed out that it is always small businesses disappearing while the giants stay put is a grim observation. It really does feel like we are heading toward a landscape with zero room for anything local or independent.

I’ve come across several posts on Hive today about sunsets. I expected to find photos or stories about beautiful sunsets here, too—but it turns out this post is about the "sunsetting" of a business venture.
