• Mapa A: El orden urbano.

Greetings, friends at @holos-lotus!
Today I want to kick off a new series of posts with a very special feeling. As I thought about the topic of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to share with you, I couldn’t help but remember our dear friend @mllg and her beloved column Desde mi mapa (From My Map), through which she left us an indelible mark of affection and learning. I feel that returning to this topic is also a way to honor her memory, bringing back into our daily practice what she so generously planted within us: the awareness of how we construct ourselves from within.
We often take for granted that the way we see life is the “only” reality. However, one of the fundamental premises of NLP reminds us of something revealing: “The map is not the territory.”
The territory is neutral reality as it actually unfolds. However, in each person’s eyes, that reality ceases to be neutral or objective, because it will always depend on the subjective interpretation we make of it.
We call this interpretation a map. We navigate the world by filtering our experiences through our senses; therefore, we don’t all do it the same way. Some perceive life primarily through images and visual details; others, through words, tones, and sounds; and still others, through bodily sensations and emotions.
To illustrate this with a real-life example: a few days ago I went downtown, a bustling and chaotic place because it’s a purely commercial area. While looking for a parking spot, a parking attendant motioned to me, pointing out a space. As I was pulling in, my husband remarked that the man was wearing a vest with the city hall logo. When we got out of the car, we asked him what the vest meant, and he told us that the city had provided them with training to direct traffic and help maintain order on the roads.
This is the fact, the territory. Now, how each person interprets it is the map.

By observing people’s reactions to this situation, we can identify three very clear perspectives:
• Map A: Urban order. Interpretation: “It’s an excellent decision by the city government. Now there’s more order, and you can walk peacefully on the sidewalks.” Their filter: A high value placed on visual order, discipline, and smooth mobility for pedestrians.
• Map B: Distrust and complaint. Interpretation: “What a sham! Where are the traffic cops? They put people to work without making a job commitment to them, and we citizens are the ones who have to pay them a mandatory tip.” Their filter: Previous experiences of financial frustration, distrust of public administration, and personal stress from feeling that they are paying for a space that belongs to everyone.
- Map C: The Opportunity of a Lifetime. Interpretation: “These men and women, most of whom are destitute and struggling to make a living, now feel valued; they take care of the space assigned to them and earn a ‘legal’ income.” Their lens: A focus on social inclusion, personal progress, and the value of work.
None of the three people is reacting to the fact itself (the territory); they are reacting to the story their own mind has constructed about the fact (their map).
Conflict arises when Map A tries to convince Map B or C that its interpretation is the only ‘truth,’ without realizing that each person views reality through a completely different lens.
Discovering your own perceptual filters is not a theoretical exercise. It is an everyday tool with a practical purpose: to transform your daily communication.
When we recognize our own map, we can understand why we react the way we do, but above all, we become more flexible in understanding the maps of those around us, bridging gaps in relationships and reducing misunderstandings.
Today, I invite you to join me in exploring this first installment—not to lecture on concepts, but to look in the mirror and reflect:
Through what lens am I speaking to the world today, and how can I communicate with greater presence and empathy?
