Looking for a change of pace, I decided to sit down and watch a romantic comedy with my wife. After doing a bit of research, we stumbled upon Solo Mio and noticed it had pretty solid audience reviews. My wife wasn't entirely sold at first because she’s never really been a fan of Kevin James’ usual characters. Personally, I don't mind his style of comedy, so we ended up giving it a shot—and honestly, we were pleasantly surprised.
Solo Mio follows Matt Taylor (Kevin James), a 50-something art teacher who proposes to his girlfriend, Heather (Julie Ann Emery). Heather teaches Italian, so Matt plans a destination wedding in Rome, wrapped into a city tour honeymoon package. But on the big day, Heather is a no-show, leaving behind only a letter explaining her reasons alongside the ring. Devastated, Matt tries to cancel the honeymoon package and get a refund, but it's already too late.
Still holding out hope that his fiancée will come back, he decides to go through with the honeymoon package activities anyway. He tours landmark sights and dives into the local cuisine. Along the way, he meets other couples who sympathize with his situation and try to cheer him up. In the middle of all the tour chaos, he meets Gia (Nicole Grimaudo), a vibrant local woman overflowing with optimism and positivity. She’s the one who truly helps him work through his heartbreak, as they slowly realize together that finding love is still possible at their age, despite the circumstances.
As you can tell, it's a fairly standard setup for a rom-com. What really stands out here, though, is the lead actor. Kevin James' brand of humor isn't for everyone, but it’s surprisingly refreshing to see his dramatic chops on display. You genuinely feel for this character—he's anxious about aging, lost in life, and on top of that, dealing with a massive heartbreak. I honestly really enjoyed his performance, and he has great chemistry with Nicole Grimaudo. At the end of the day, that chemistry and performance are really what make or break the movie.
Beyond the characters, the story delivers some meaningful takeaways—particularly around personal growth after a breakup. It touches on how the pain of disappointment only sticks around if we let it, and how joy and happiness can find us again, even when we think our time has passed. These surprisingly thoughtful themes aimed at a more mature audience are blended with light, easygoing humor. Nothing overly complex or awkward, which I really appreciated, especially nowadays when every comedy seems to rely on cringe or dark humor.
I honestly recommend giving it a watch. It’s a great movie night pick for couples, but equally worth watching if you're single, as it carries an uplifting message for everyone: true love comes when you seek it honestly, not out of fear of being alone or at the cost of changing who you are just to please someone you don't truly love.
