Talking about the Lanterns series has sparked quite a debate. I wouldn't say opinions are strictly divided between those who consider it a "real" Green Lantern show and those who don't; I think there's a lot more nuance and plenty of ways to unpack its message. Even though I'm a sucker for a great superhero story, I didn't mind at all that this series steered clear of endless ring-slinging battles and CGI overload. I totally got that it was meant to give a powerful, grounded context to a character who's about to anchor a broader cinematic universe.
The show really shines when you take a second to appreciate the subtext and themes. One big takeaway is the procedural, detective-driven angle—like I mentioned, I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative arc as if I were binging a season of True Detective. Another core thread is identity. That's why we get a couple of flashback episodes exploring how John was groomed as a kid to be a Lantern with a pre-packaged identity, forced to carry the burden of being fearless, when his deepest fear was actually just being a Lantern.
That’s why when he finally claims the ring, he alters the oath—a touch I genuinely loved because it hits that exact point home: "In brightest day, in blackest night. I’ll embrace my fear, I’ll do what's right. I choose this ring, I choose this fight, in service to the lantern's light." That final choice makes peace with the idea of being a superhero; he is the one who chooses it, rather than buckling under external pressure.
With Hal Jordan, it’s completely the opposite. For him, the ring arriving in his life was finally securing an identity. That’s why he clung so tightly to it and didn't view John as a successor, but rather as an apprentice. Kyle Chandler absolutely crushed this role—easily one of the best casting choices I’ve seen in a while. I’m bummed his character isn't sticking around; I was holding out hope he wouldn't meet a grim end, but it’s clear John is officially Earth's Green Lantern now.
All in all, it’s a hell of a series. I totally get why hardcore DC purists might take issue with the creative liberties taken, but for those of us who aren't quite as rigid about our capes and cowls, the story works wonderfully. Sure, not everything landed—like how Hal's death played out—but those minor missteps get completely overshadowed by everything else the show gets right.
