MONOMAD - My corner in black and white [EN/ES]

This is my entry for the #monomad challenge, hosted by @monochromes and @brumest in the Black And White community.

My corner is built into my closet, and that explains almost everything. A bookshelf on top. Below it, the desk where I study, work, watch the occasional series and draw mandalas when stress gets the better of me. I put it together with no aesthetic criteria at all, just affection, and you know affection doesn't always match.

The Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre and a little moon with a succulent live here. My mom gave me both. My family has its own mix of beliefs and trusts the Virgen, so I keep her there to look after me and all that. The moon is a different story. I love the moon, we were at a fair, my mom saw it and thought of me. You wouldn't believe how hard it is for someone to look at you and get it right.

My aunt brought me this Eiffel Tower from Italy many years ago. It started as a living room ornament and then I kept it for my room, because to me it means the dream of leaving Cuba someday and seeing the world. Next to it is a Rubik's cube keychain. I always liked it and I've never known how to solve it. One day I asked my ex for the keychain and he gave it to me. Today it's half a memory of him and half a promise to myself to learn how to solve it. An unsolved cube next to a tower pointing at another country. If I put that in a novel, they'd tell me it's too obvious.

Siempre me gustó y nunca he sabido armarlo.

This sign announces that no princes or princesses live here, only imperfect beings, and that this is more fun. My mom gave it to me because that phrase represents me so much.

My dad brought me the tiger from his first and only trip to Italy. I'd asked him for a stuffed animal and he came back with a tiger. It has no name because I never decided on one. It wears cat-eye sunglasses that a friend gave me, a friend who moved to Spain a long time ago. They're so scratched they're useless now, and that's exactly why I keep them, as a memory of her and our friendship. A tiger wearing a faraway friend's glasses. Tell me there's anything more romantic on a shelf.

I gave myself this little bear covered in hearts. I've always been a fan of stuffed animals and always wanted someone to give me one, so who better for the job than me. I found it in a secondhand shop, surrounded by plushies that had belonged to other people, and I fell for all those tiny hearts. I thought about naming it Love and never dared. It wears a visor my mom gave me, just like the tiger wears its glasses. It keeps me company every night and it's there when I work on the computer, like a coworker who never has opinions.

Pensé ponerle Amor y nunca me animé.

This bouquet sits to the left of the desk. In the photo it looks white, but in real life it's pink and salmon with purple butterflies, and it's funny to have to explain a color in a black and white community. My ex gave it to me for my 26th birthday. It has 26 roses, one for every year nobody had given me flowers. It was something I'd dreamed of. Yes, I know the ex from the cube is the same one from the roses. I don't throw anything away.

Yo no boto nada.

This small frame holds a line by Rupi Kaur and a woman hugging herself. It says you're still here, living despite everything. My friend Betty gave it to me for one of my birthdays. I read the book it comes from in a single day and recognized myself in the author and her poems. When a friend gives you a framed line you love, you know she listens.

And then the books. Four volumes of 1000 preguntas y respuestas that my mom gave me, the kind with one question and one short answer on every page. I read them out of curiosity, because learning that way is incredibly easy. Next to them are my psychology books, and I'd love to have so many more. In Cuba they're hard to find because of the prices, and international publishers don't send their books here. That's why every spine on that shelf weighs more than it looks.

On my laptop lid there are two stickers. One is the Hive logo. They gave it to me at the first crypto event I ever went to, where I met Eddie (@theinfiltred), who introduced me to this whole universe. In Cuba the crypto topic has always had a bad name because of pyramid scams and what was said about Bitcoin. Eddie opened the door, I walked in, I created my account and here I am. The other sticker is the logo of the Centro de Investigaciones Sociales, where I had my first job. Both remind me of a beginning.

If someone walks into my room, they'll see a messy bookshelf. I see almost everyone who has mattered to me, spread across three shelves and a desk. Several of them aren't close anymore. The things stayed.

And your corner, what does it hold?
