Learning Can Be Easy, and It Can Be Difficult

Learning is a process, a lifelong process. That's something I know about learning that applies to all, irrespective of one's ability to comprehend and learn things, either quickly or slowly, easily or with difficulty. We can't run away from learning. Well, except we don't want to really grow in life. As much as we desire to make headway in life, learning is mandatory and inescapable. Not just that, but the character, training and discipline that make it possible.

There was a time when we couldn't read or write. Then we learnt it. I can remember how I've witnessed even to this day the different pace it takes for different children to learn to read and write. It explains how the learning process is not a straight line graph. It takes different effort and time for different people. Adding to that, it's important to also recognise that the learning process of different people varies with the different things they're learning.

It's funny how a person can grasp academic knowledge easily, while another can find it difficult to learn other things the other person finds easy to learn. That's a reality. As a person, there are things you learn easily and others that take a lot of time and much effort, with difficulty to pull through. This is where we have to recognise and become conscious of our strengths and weaknesses, and apply this to our learning journey.

A typical example is knowing what we were good at in our academics while in high school. For some, they were good with words. For others, they were good with numbers. It's clear then where one's efforts should lie when it comes to studying. I was able to identify that and used it to my advantage and maximised time as best as I could for optimum productivity and success. This is the gain of knowing where our strengths and weaknesses lie.

Since learning is necessary, identifying and recognising one's areas of strength and weakness is important. I don't think that learning a new thing is just outright difficult for some and easy for others. It's not a case of generalisation. There are things that one can find easy to learn, while difficult for another and vice versa. Interest also plays a role. The more you're interested in a thing, the more you find it easy to learn. Otherwise can make it difficult, not necessarily so.

For me, I remember how easy it was when it came to learning graphic design, which is a skill I'm into. Still learning and growing though. It wasn't like I really had an interest and prior exposure to it. Yet, it somehow came easy for me. When I tried to take a course some time back then, very different from the aforementioned, it didn't come easy for me because of what I was dealing with, and perhaps the way it was taught or communicated.

Learning a new thing isn't the issue, except we don't actually want to learn. With the will and desire, learning comes differently based on what we're trying to learn, the appeal to us and our abilities. Finding some things easy to learn and others difficult tells me something about myself, and I think it applies to all. Not everything will come easy to learn, or be difficult. And while I try to learn because it's necessary, I need to identify where to expend more time and energy.
