This seems like a topic that has been on the hearts of many for one reason or another. Whatever intention or reason that may be, it seems to have captivated the interest of several people and demanded a conversation. There was a time when this wasn't considered and wasn't a topic of interest or discussion. Today, it's one that has people interested. And when I say “this,” I mean the clamour or consideration of taxing places of worship.
Perhaps, it's understandable why people have become so interested in the finances generated from places of worship and so they think such places should be taxed. I mean, with how a number of these places of worship have diverged from their purposes and meaning to become business centres in disguise, it's something to consider and it's why people tend to clamour for government to become involved in religious matters through taxation.
It's sad and disturbing to see some of the places of worship lose the essence of what they were meant for and become more of business enterprises rather, in the guise of religious buildings and settings. What and where should be about drawing people to God and edifying their spirit according to God's scriptural teachings and principles has become about money and little to nothing about the actual purpose, which is really a concern on its own.
If they operate more like businesses and generate huge money, then they should be taxed. This is the clamour of many, and this came about because the focus has shifted from the true essence of places of worship; to worship God. Looking at it this way looks like a valid claim, independent of the intentions behind such a clamour. But then, there are places of worship truly abiding by the purpose and essence of their existence. What shall be said about those?
Should they be taxed too? And what's more? There are many other places of worship that are barely generating enough to keep the place running and to provide for the welfare of the clergy in charge. Amidst that, they could also be considering and providing for the most needy as well. This is a reflection of what places of worship do; charitable services and other developments. This is especially true of some that are receiving huge finances.
Considering what some of the places of worship do for society and how many of them are barely doing well, with no support from anyone for themselves, but using the metrics of those doing the business things to make this demand on all, it seems like a burden rather than fixing something. Sadly, some of the worship places are more like business enterprises; these places are however nonprofit and generate money through non-commercial services.
It's not a claim siding with improper actions because that's rather disturbing. If they engage in commercial services they would have to pay, which is also important to state that when places of worship run businesses, institutions or enterprises generating money, they should be taxed. That's logical. But when the government get involved in religious matters through taxes on money not generated from such commercial ventures, it becomes an issue.
