Saludos comunidad
Greetings, community
A few days ago I was scrolling on the Internet, and I came across a comment where they alluded to some war films that truly portrayed what it means to be in the middle of a conflict of those dimensions.
Among those mentioned was "All Quiet on the Western Front," the 2022 German version directed by Edward Berger. I confess that until now I hadn't seen it. I found it in one of those movie banks we have around here, where USB drives are loaded, which these days are quite crowded, and the oil blockade has made the energy backup of telephone transmission towers, as well as radio and television, quite vulnerable, leaving the population unable to watch or listen to their programming normally, so these contents have become a kind of refuge, although sometimes what one finds in there isn't exactly consolation.
Visually it's quite a strong thing, of a brutality that doesn't revel in spectacle, but throws you into the mud with the characters, with a soundtrack that at times feels ominous. The plot centers on World War I, the Western Front, between Germans and French; it isn't the typical story of good guys versus bad guys. Here there are no good guys, or rather, the good guys are some boys who have barely left school and are already signing papers to go to the front, convinced by a teacher who sells them the war as a patriotic adventure. The protagonist is Paul Bäumer, played by Felix Kammerer, a boy who isn't even eighteen yet, who receives his uniform as if he were being handed a ticket to glory.
And there's one of the first things that shocks you: the film opens with a scene that isn't a battle, but one where they collect the bodies of fallen soldiers, take off their uniforms, wash them, mend them, iron them, and repackage them as if they were new; then those uniforms are given to recruits, who arrive excited to serve their country. Paul receives one and even finds a tag with the name of a previous soldier. When he asks, the officer tells him it was a sewing mistake, a lie so shameless it makes you angry; that single scene already illustrates what we need to know about how the war machine works: bodies are disposable, but uniforms are recycled.
There are no heroes, there is no super-trained soldier who takes out a hundred enemies by himself, there are no moments of epic glory with triumphal music; what there is is hunger, mud, rats, gas, machine guns, and death—death that comes without warning, without meaning, and without a redemptive narrative; the characters lose hope and humanity as the film progresses, and as a viewer you feel that same weariness.
There's a scene near the end that perfectly illustrates that idea of "don't count your chickens before they hatch": it's announced that the war is going to end, that an armistice was signed that will take effect at eleven in the morning on November 11, 1918, but a German general, who doesn't want to accept defeat, orders one last attack; in just a few minutes those same soldiers who already saw themselves returning home are massacred, and the most obscene thing is that the politicians and generals who pull the strings of the conflict don't even get their boots dirty; those who die are the ones at the bottom, the ones who always die.
Paul dies almost at the end, just as the clock strikes eleven and the war officially ends. A new recruit picks up his badge, just as someone picked up his uniform at the beginning. The cycle closes; there is no lesson, no justice, only the silence of the fallen and the indifference of those who survive, to keep telling the same story.
When you watch a war film and it makes you want to play a war video game, it's because you've just seen propaganda. But when you watch "All Quiet on the Western Front," all you feel is a void in your stomach and the certainty that you would never want to be in that place; it's because you've seen something that comes close to reality. Most films and series of this genre that we consume are Hollywood machinery for emotional recruitment; they show heroism, camaraderie, noble sacrifice, giving the feeling that war, although terrible, is also a test of character. This film does none of that; it shows war for what it is: an industry of sacrificing people who sometimes don't even understand why they're there.
I don't know if anyone would want to watch this on a Friday night looking for entertainment; probably not, but I do think we need more cinema like this, that doesn't romanticize, that doesn't sugarcoat, that doesn't sell you the idea that there is something noble in dying for whatever fatherland is in fashion, because as long as we keep consuming stories that turn violence into spectacle and violent people into heroes, we will keep repeating the same wars with different uniforms.
