Pierre stood motionless when he noticed the symbol on the violin, and at the same time he couldn’t stop thinking about that phrase—The melody ends—as the young man was very frightened; it was already dawn, and he thought about not playing that violin anymore until he figured out what was going on. Pierre looked again at the five open graves, and the cat was still there beside one of them, not moving, simply staring intently at Pierre as if waiting for an order; however, all the young man did was pick up the case and put his violin away, and as he did so, he felt a strange sensation.
Finally, he managed to put the violin away, but he noticed that some black letters had appeared on the case, as if written there. But since it was nighttime, it was very difficult to read them. Even so, the last part of the inscription read: “Music remembers what the dead forget.” However, Pierre didn’t know what it meant, but in his short life, he remembered that someone had mentioned those words before—and it was none other than his grandfather.
Then he remembered being with his grandfather when he was a little boy, and how his grandfather had been cleaning that very same violin—and Pierre realized that it used to be just an instrument, but now it seemed to be something much greater. A few seconds later, after the violin had been put away, it began to play. Pierre was startled, for it was a very soft melody, and every note was perfect. At the same time, the black cat slowly raised its head. There was something strange about that melody, since it wasn’t a complete song, but rather parts of a composition that had been forgotten many years ago.
Pierre stepped away from the violin, and another memory came to him: his grandfather had once told him a story about a violinist who had disappeared in that very cemetery—and now that story was beginning to make sense. In the midst of searching for an answer, the young man picked up the case again and, using his flashlight, examined every detail until he found five marks—as if there were one for each grave. Everything began to fall into place like a puzzle: there were five marks, five graves, and five notes. But something was still missing—the black cat.
He kept looking and found a small piece of paper that was folded as if it had been hidden there for decades. Pierre unfolded it carefully and saw a short message that read “If you ever hear the melody, don’t try to finish it”—Pierre was startled, since the shadow was telling him the opposite—“Finish the melody”—so he thought that his grandfather had already been there before, which was why he’d kept the note, and he closed the case, but at that very moment he heard a very loud noise that startled him, and the black cat disappeared as well.
Pierre looked around, but there was nothing there; yet the noise could be heard again, and this time it was coming from one of the open graves, where it was growing louder and louder. The sun was already rising, and Pierre tried to run, but he found himself staring at the violin, realizing that the tombs weren’t waiting for someone to open them—they were waiting for someone to play the melody. So he left, and now this young man had to uncover the history of that instrument before moving on; if his grandfather had left that warning, there must be a reason.
