No more heroes

20260702_130823 (1).jpg

Since I had guests last weekend and was unable to join in the Weekend Experiences, I thought I'd delight you all by posting on last week's topic this week instead.

Until I saw the prompt, I can’t say I’d ever come across the expression "Be your own hero," but I’m guessing that it’s one of those newfangled motivational slogans from around the turn of the century. Back in the twentieth century, when the world was a far more sensible place, anyone coming up with a maxim like "Be your own hero" or "Clean your room" would have been placed in the stocks and pelted with rotten fruit until they saw the error of their ways.

Now, I don't know about being my own hero, I’m more the hide-behind-the-sofa-until-the-bogeyman-is-gone type than I am the heroic type, but one thing I’ve always been is self-reliant and resilient. I know, I know, that’s two things, but nobody will notice.

The truth is that being raised by two drunks who made no bones about telling you that you were an unwanted accident is rather like being thrown into deep water without swimming lessons or water wings. You very quickly learn to swim, or you drown. Self-reliance isn't so much a virtue as a prerequisite for survival.

My father seemed to expect us children to emerge from the womb fully formed, immediately useful and already contributing to the household. He had about as much interest in parenting as my mother did, and she had none.

He liked to regale us with stories of the Spartans and how they exposed infants to harsh conditions to test their robustness and how children were sent away from their families to fend for themselves to encourage independence and resilience from a very young age.

I could complain, but I won't. As it turned out, it was excellent preparation for the turbulent life that awaited me.

Turned out great. You should be proud of yourself for doing so well and coming from such shit.

Being told to be unwanted can be psychologically hard for a kid, even worse than being beaten, but hey they will need your help as elders and you can say, you are unwanted parents

    Last week this week?

    Nuts, but I like it!

Am glad you definitely turned out okay...and you are definitely your own hero

As much as I am appreciative of my own parents (who were deeply involved and wonderful), I sometimes believe that a little tough love might have better prepared myself and my siblings for the harsh realities of life especially in my younger years.

That said, we all turned out okay ...lol

What's that saying? What doesn't kill you makes you stronger?

Sorry, I'm not going to laud your parents because you ended up OK. Better than OK. Wonderful. Admirable. Strong. But what a waste of a childhood. All those years. Sorry I can't see the method in their cruelty.

You are just made of finer stuff. And what about your brother? How did that work out for him. As fine as you turned out, imagine if they had helped you along.

Can't see the humor in it, but all the more power to you that you always can.

Well, you turned out alright. I do have to be rather happy that you wrote, as your first tag 'weekend-engagemen'. :P

  • @owasco(73)· 43d

Your parents knew what they were doing, if they managed to turn out the likes of you,

  • What a lovely and honest piece my lovely @deirdyweirdy. It could have been quite bleak without the humour, but you managed to turn things into something positive. Just from this I can see your strength and resilience. I was ready to cry, but you made me laugh. 💕
