Solidarity is a beautiful word, and only those who work to let it touch their hearts will see it shine through their presence and seep through the pores of their skin and into their homes through every window and door, through every crack, like rays of sunlight or raindrops falling on the roof to linger and multiply into good, positive deeds; and cultivating it day by day alongside gratitude will bring about positive changes in human beings.

Did you know that there are many ways to love and that solidarity is one of them? That’s what my parents used to say—that we should never stop doing it, because there will always be someone to help, or a tree, or a little animal, or even just anything.

And I’m grateful to God for placing me in a loving home where the walls will offer shelter from the harsh sun or the rain. And most of the neighbors on the block with whom we shared everything—from a cup of coffee to a loaf of bread and even a hallaca—and, in between, whatever our minds can imagine.

Once, a neighbor said to my parents, “Your house is magical—the door and windows are magical—because I see people coming and going, and they always have something in their hands. How do you manage to have enough for everyone?” And my father replied, “Neighbor, if we open our hands to give, we’ll never stop receiving, and we’ll all have the ability to build a magical window.”

And it won’t be because we give expecting to receive; it won’t be simply because the universe conspires to reward in some way that helping hand that didn’t mind giving something to help a neighbor. That is a divine law. It’s a matter of “neither taking away nor adding”—because something will always come your way.

¿Has compartido un pan?

My siblings and I focus on building magical windows and doors in our homes; we’re there for anyone who needs us, we’re grateful for what we have and we share it, and I know of many people who have built them too. And that will be a sign that solidarity has been cultivated there—a solidarity that knows no schedule or calendar dates; it will be etched into the walls of that home, into its cracks, and into every step that has ever passed through its hallways.

Because solidarity will come dressed in its finest and accompanied by good deeds. And the fact is that love will be an ingredient that, when it dwells in a heart or a home, will need no words and will be the medicine that always accompanies solidarity; one cannot exist without the other, and together they’ll be able to help heal a wounded heart or simply bring joy to someone in need—and it won’t matter if we have to part with something if someone else needs it; it will be unconditional.

Have you ever offered a hot cup of coffee to the security guard who watches over your sleep, or given up your seat to someone who needed it? Have you shared a piece of bread? But let’s never give or share what we have to spare; that would look very bad and be far from what it truly means to be a supportive person.

And let’s not wait for others to tell us what to do, because people’s needs will be boundless, and when we open our hands to give, the magic at every door and every window will be set in motion, and when that happens, it will be like a domino effect. It will spread like seeds; birds will carry them across seas and rivers, along highways, over mountains, and it will reach from heart to heart.

During the recent catastrophe we experienced in my country, Venezuela—the “double earthquake”—solidarity manifested itself in many ways: some prayed, others donated material goods, many others handled the logistics of delivering supplies, and still others rescued survivors and recovered bodies, because everyone deserves a dignified burial. This, in my view, represents one of the most beautiful acts of solidarity.

Because, given the grief that will already exist over the supposed death of a family member—if there is no body, there will be no evidence of the event itself—there will most likely be double the grief. For this reason, it will be necessary to recover each body so that their family and friends can give them a Christian burial, or one in accordance with their religion.

And all expressions of solidarity will be perfectly valid; everyone will give according to their means and help others, to restore their will to live, to let them know they are not alone, so that in the end they may achieve a better quality of life and well-being.

As a people, we have endured many disasters, but we are resilient, with an unwavering spirit of kindness when it comes to helping those in need; each of us will do our best to assist the vulnerable.

Solidarity will be present in every gesture we make. When I speak of this, I’ve kept in mind the legacy of my parents, my ancestors, and my family—of whom I’m proud.

My parents were kind-hearted people, and one of my family’s mottos is “Where two eat, ten can eat.” Sharing bread doesn’t mean waiting until we have extra; it means sharing it when we have it, breaking it into small pieces so there’s enough for everyone. And I’ll divide a two-liter bottle of soda among twenty people, and there will be enough, because the idea is for everyone to have at least a sip of that life-giving liquid.

Solidarity will always find a way to shine through, even if pettiness puts up barriers.

Dear #Empowertalent community, making people feel good and helping them are habits that take root at home, although that isn’t the only determining factor. When a person is caring, it stems from a home that opened a magical window or door; their parents fostered positive emotional bonds, and dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins—the “happiness hormones”—will run wild within that person; they’ll feel happy, they’ll be radiant, their heart will leap with joy, and their immune system will be strengthened.

They will rarely be upset. They will form positive bonds with those around them, and wherever they go, they will show solidarity at any time—from giving up their seat on the bus to someone in need without waiting for anyone to ask, to a pat on the shoulder, and sometimes simply by offering a hot cup of coffee to soothe a stomach yearning for peace, to extending a helping hand to someone immersed in pain and telling those we love, appreciate, and even those we don’t know, that with every fall comes a rise; with every pain comes healing.

Solidarity will be something beautiful for our neighbors; it will be a bridge of energy that sustains them, bringing them comfort, offering them a haven of peace, and telling them that hope for a better tomorrow is still alive.

We wander like night owls, carrying a grief I never thought would be ours, but that’s who we Venezuelans are: we come together to share it, and we try to overcome it despite everything; we are a united, resilient people. And in the end, we’ll realize that without mutual support—if we don’t cultivate solidarity—we’ll have wasted our time, and life will have passed us by, but we won’t have left our mark on it.

We are nothing without that human warmth, without that “I’m here for whatever you need.” We must enjoy every minute of our lives by doing good deeds to leave a good legacy; let’s build magical windows and doors to bring joy to others and never forget that there will always be a helping hand willing to give without expecting anything in return.
