Greetings, everyone. I usually come to Italy every year to visit my niece with my brother and enjoy the landscapes of Tuscany. Today, I will write to you about the medieval town of San Gimignano.From Florence we took a train to Poggobonsi and from there a bus to San Gimignano. The drive lasted about 30 minutes and what amazed me when we got closer was the sight from a distance. The city lies on a hill with many towers.And around the City, vineyards.
The main feature of this city is its towers; there used to be 72, but today only 14 remain.The towers were built by wealthy citizens who competed to see who could build a taller tower.Some of the towers are also open to visitors. Families lived in them, and their rooms were very small, with walls two meters thick.When we arrived, we entered through one of the gates—since there are 13 of them—and headed towards the thetrgu
This triangular square completely captivated me with its shape, and in its very center stood an old stone well from the 13th century, around which people gathered. At one time, this well supplied the city with water.
Soon we went to the second square and the streets that connected them were narrow and full of tourists. I was surprised how alive they were. There were many cafes and souvenir markets on the square itself. Along the street there were craft shops, galleries, museums
I couldn't miss the chance, so I immediately got in line at the famous "Dondoli" gelateria, bought some ice cream, and confirmed the claim that it is the best ice cream in the world. Believe me, it really is. And then we headed towards the vineyards.
Naturally, we visited the winery, where the hosts gave us a warm welcome. First, they took us through the cellars where the wine is stored in oak barrels, followed by a tasting session. I tried the famous "Vernaccia di San Gimignano" white wine; our hosts were truly hospitable, serving us prosciutto and cheese in olive oil. They asked us not to use our mobile phones, and I am really sorry I couldn't take photos of such beauty.It was the perfect end to the day in Tuscany.
