The Friend Who Asks Nothing in Return

2012 during my computer diploma training, I met a guy who was as calm as me. He didn't have many friends and he loved his space. Our friendship started like every other friendship and soon we became brothers from different parents. We shared our secrets and talked about anything with no fear. Till date, our friendship still stands with genuinity and trust. Even though I was an introvert, somehow I was free around him, and one thing stands out—he was the definition of true friendship, not only because he wasn't there for personal gain, but because he took his time to know me.

True friendship can be defined differently by different individuals. To some, it's someone who comes through for them in times of need; to some, it's someone who stands by them in their difficult moments; and to another, it's someone who listens to them even when what they're saying doesn't make sense. We all have our own definition, and for me, it's someone who desires to see me grow and makes an effort to ensure that I'm able to become what I want to be. This is exactly who this friend is. He never gives up on me; he's always standing by, cheering me on to see me win.

Together, we have gone out looking for jobs. He personally decided to follow me to places that weren't convenient for him just to ensure I am safe. We have become more than friends and turned into brothers. My grief has become his own, and despite my being older than him in age, he sees me like his younger brother who still needs someone to take care of him. With this, there's nothing more I can ask for. While others may come for their convenience and profit, he seeks neither his convenience nor any benefit he desires to gain.

There's an adage that says "a friend in need is a friend indeed." He is indeed a friend, and he's someone I can proudly talk about. I was surprised sometime ago when he called me to join him at the market. I went there hoping to help him get the things he came to buy, only to realize that the shopping was for me. I didn't ask him for it; I believe he felt the need to and decided to surprise me that way. Even though he's gaining nothing in return, he's still here standing and always ready to come through. While he is a true friend to me, I am also one to him.
