Anime Movie Review: “YOUR NAME/KIMI NO NA WA” (2016) [EN/ES]

[EN] Hello, this is my first post in the community, and I sincerely hope you like it. I decided to write a review and critique of the anime movie I present to you, since I watched it again at home, motivated by the new news released by its director and its re-release in cinemas worldwide.

Intro MV5BMTIyNzFjNzItZmQ1MC00NzhjLThmMzYtZjRhN2Y3MmM2OGQyXkEyXkFqcGc@.V1.jpg Source “Your Name (Kimi no Na Wa)” is an anime movie directed by Makoto Shinkai and released in 2016. Shortly after its premiere, it became a box-office success and a worldwide sales phenomenon, notable for its excellent critical acclaim and a cultural impact that transcends generations; however, even before its release, Makoto was already a recognized and established director with works such as “5 Centimeters per Second” and “The Garden of Words” (because of my admiration for the director, I will be reviewing these works in the future).

Plot, characters, and story

The story begins with a recounting of events that happened “that day,” literal words with which the narrators (the main characters) describe the events; therefore, one can identify that they are telling something from the near future. Without much wait, we are introduced to the protagonists: Mitsuha Miyamizu, a teenager from a small town full of traditions called Itomori, who feels trapped in her birthplace and dreams of big cities as an escape and of discovering the mysteries surrounding the areas unknown to her; and her counterpart Taki Tachibana, a student who works part-time at a restaurant while dreaming of becoming a famous and wealthy architect; no matter how hard he looks, he has had little luck in love.

Based on the Japanese theory of the red thread that connects souls, both begin to swap bodies inexplicably during the night, introducing a mix of mysticism and traditional culture into the plot. The screenwriters take advantage of the body swap to show reactions, feelings, and even confusion; they describe in the work joys, promises, and somewhat comedic situations that occur between the characters. Mitsuha learns to manage Taki’s life and work and even tries to find him a date, while Taki has courage for some things Mitsuha does not, increasing his popularity at school and leaving femininity aside to give his friend’s image a “stronger” touch.

In the body swap, the “red thread” is more tied than ever, and it is the strategy used by the production team to answer several permanent variables in love stories: How close are you to me? How much do you know about me? Do you know me?

In response to the above variables, it is inferred that: they are closer to each other than anyone has ever been; I know more about you and know you better than you know yourself.

Without spoiling, the plot twist occurs when one of them loses communication with the other and begins to forget them, where timelines are blurred and the time factor begins to play a fundamental role, without detracting from the great friends of both who are part of the adventures in the search—both EARTHLY and TEMPORAL—to find one another.

Visual style and soundtrack

The film has an extremely high-level visual display, with craftsmanship that enhances life, landscapes, food, and above all the sky (the place where what causes an accident is observed); it carries implicit realism in the drawing with lighting effects, creating a lovingly poetic atmosphere.

The soundtrack was handled by the Japanese rock band RADWIMPS, with songs that blend pop, rock, and melodic instruments that add emotional weight. However, given the visual style, plot, script, and story, some orchestral music could have been added, which would enhance the scenes and the feeling that the production team wanted to convey.

Legacy and conclusion

A masterpiece of cinema and anime that marked a before and after in the history of those who enjoy this type of content.
