Hola amigos || Hello friends
There are things we cannot hide from plain sight, because there are certainly events that define generations and others that define an entire industry. Of course, I’m talking about video games. The thing is, yesterday I was hit by a wave of nostalgia, just as I have been on other occasions, so I wanted to go back to that era which, without a doubt, continues to be a source of energy that reminds me I’m still alive and that life is like video games they get older too, ha ha ha… Although, at 42 years old, I’ve played dozens of titles from the Mario universe, reliving his adventures is always a fond memory and, to be honest, it personally helps me de-stress.
How could we forget the iconic Donkey Kong on the NES? After all, this wasn’t just the birth of a global icon, but also the first time many of us were introduced to the core mechanics of the platformer genre and, of course, the first appearance of our much-loved plumber. Remember that when Donkey Kong was first released, Mario was still known as Jumpman, and the premise of the game was simple, as with most arcade games ported to the NES. The gameplay might seem straightforward, but I actually had to make many attempts to rescue Pauline from the clutches of the giant gorilla whilst dodging barrels, flames and objects hurtling down at breakneck speed.
What I find fascinating about playing Donkey Kong again today is realising just how much precision it demanded. With an extremely basic control scheme that involved moving side-to-side and jumping. In one respect, Adam Sandler was spot on in the film Pixels: the game forced you to calculate every move down to the millimetre. I mean, it was all about patterns if you followed them perfectly, you’d undoubtedly break any record. In fact, it was by remembering Adam’s words that I managed to complete the second level of the game.
Unlike the Super Mario Bros games we’re familiar with, Jumpman feels very different here so much so that a poorly timed jump or a fall from even a small height would cost you a life. Another interesting fact is the hammer, which became the first power-up in the history of video games. Those few seconds of invincibility, with the frantic music playing in the background, broke the rhythm of dodging to give you total control… although you couldn’t jump whilst using it, it was quite entertaining; Luna even loved the soundtrack, ha ha ha… Its levels are quite strategic; from the sloping beams of the first level to the riveted structure of the final level, each screen demanded a clear strategy and a well-measured pace, just as Adam Sandler pointed out.
There’s no doubt that looking back on this game makes me appreciate the franchise’s evolution even more. It’s incredible to think how a small collection of pixels, 8-bit sound effects and three screens of non-stop challenges ended up becoming the cornerstone of what Nintendo is today and the history of digital entertainment. That’s why Mario Bros is one of the most famous characters in the history of video games.
