Hive Grove: Can 5 HIVE Beat 100 HP Delegation? Which Wins?

What if I told you that just 5 HIVE could generate more daily liquid HIVE than delegating 100 Hive Power?
Sounds impossible, right?

At first, I didn't believe it either—until I noticed something odd about a transaction that landed in my wallet. The amount wasn't exactly huge; in fact, you could even call it small. Yet, that small figure piqued my curiosity.

That's exactly what made me open my calculator.
The answer led me to an interesting comparison between Hive Grove and Hive Power delegation.

What Is Hive Grove?

Hive Grove is a social game on the Hive Blockchain where you earn a small amount of Hive simply by playing, while interacting with friends and acquaintances and strengthening your friendships.

In this game, you need to water your tree once every 24 hours. After watering your tree, you will receive a reward in the form of liquid Hive sent directly to your wallet.

In addition to watering your own tree, you can also help water other players' trees and interact with them at the campfire.

My Daily Rewards from Delegating Hive Power

Currently, I am delegating portions of my Hive Power to several accounts in varying amounts. Some of these accounts regularly distribute curation rewards on a daily basis, with the payout amounts varying depending on each account's specific policy regarding the percentage of rewards shared with delegators.

The accounts I support that provide daily rewards to delegators are @ecency, @indonesianhiver, and @hivekr. I have delegated 100 HP to each of these accounts, and the rewards I receive from them can be seen in the screenshot below.

The Numbers That Surprised Me

Okay, those were the rewards I received from delegating 100 HP. Now, let's look at the rewards I earned from playing Hive Grove simply by watering my tree.

Do you notice anything unusual when comparing the screenshots of the delegation rewards and the Hive Grove rewards? By the way, for those who don't know, each tree in Hive Grove offers different rewards; the details are shown in the image below.

Only the base reward is calculated (excluding random bonuses)

Why Doesn't Everyone Buy Oak Trees?

If a player's goal is purely ROI, the Oak is mathematically the most profitable choice.
However, keep in mind that each tree has its own unique advantages.

Cherry trees grow 25% faster.
Willow trees grow 15% faster.
Bonus chances are higher.
Bonus multipliers also vary.
Rewards increase according to the growth stage (Young, Mature, Elder, Ancient), so the long-term real value depends on more than just the base APR.

This means the APR figures mentioned above are merely the minimums.
The actual APR is likely higher due to factors such as: bonus rewards growth multipliers tree growth speed

I love Hive Grove! I'm there every day. It's fun, and a nice way to help others, which I love to do. (for example, visit @tokenfaucet)

One difference in Hive delegation versus buying HG trees is that you can un-delegate any time but you can't get a refund on trees. From the moment you buy a tree, you're under water from a strictly profit-loss point of view. You get Hive back when you water your tree but I haven't done the math to see if you can actually make a profit on your purchase price by the time the tree eventually stops paying out, which I assume it will do at some point, but I could be wrong.

Again, I love the HG game!

But remember, it IS a game. You should be there because you enjoy playing it, in my opinion. And enjoy it while it's there. Hive games don't always last very long. Not saying HG won't last. Just a general statement. If you can get a few years out of a game, I think that's a good record. Mine have been online over 2 years, and still are playable, earn-able, and able to cash out. But I understand there are reasons for whatever happens and if I risk capital in a game, I am fully aware that it could disappear tomorrow.

Nice breakdown. I've considered investing more in Hive Grove, but I often forget to check in and water my tree daily! Mostly remember when other users share their snaps, and I see them on Slothbuzz.com. Most of my earnings come from Sloths Mining War currently; maybe it's time to diversify a little more!SLOTH

I was actually thinking of getting another tree before reading this. I had 7 Hive, mostly earned from this game. And after reading this blog I went ahead and got an oak tree. Now I have two trees. Let's see how things turn out from this purchase.

It's all about perception brother. I WAS a gamer myself, I can totally relate this post to an early adopter point of view. When there's new game roll out, usually the payout is extremely high and profitable. And over the next few weeks or months if you get lucky, you will be consistently getting lower but still profitable reward. And in the end, when the reward stretched to almost impossible to ROI within one year, things will go south from there on. By then, getting new blood become extremely difficult because the payout aren't as attractive as it was before.

Anyway, thank you for sharing. Currently hands are tied and majority of my delegations are 0 return except hivekr and Ecency. I choose the community way instead, since my "game" is postingan itself. Insyah Allah hive price goes back to it's previous glory, I can recover some of my losses 😅
