📚 Foundation: Can Mathematics Predict the Fall of an Empire? 🌌🧮
After spending so much time in the universe of Dune, starting Isaac Asimov's Foundation (1951) felt like stepping into a completely different kind of science fiction.
There are no sandworms, messiahs, or desert planets at the center of everything. Instead, Asimov begins with an idea that immediately caught my attention:
What if mathematics could predict the future of an entire civilization?

Humanity has spread across the galaxy, and the enormous Galactic Empire has existed for thousands of years.
From the outside, it still appears incredibly powerful.
But Hari Seldon knows something everyone else doesn't.

This is easily the idea that hooked me.
Psychohistory cannot tell you what one particular person will do tomorrow. Instead, it predicts how billions of human beings are likely to behave collectively.

But, of course, things aren't quite that simple.

The greatest weapon of the Foundation isn't an enormous fleet.
It's knowledge.

Something took me a little while to get used to: Foundation doesn't give us a traditional protagonist.
Characters appear, confront a crisis, and then suddenly decades pass. New people arrive. Another crisis begins.

But eventually I understood what Asimov was doing.
The protagonist isn't really a person. It's the Foundation itself.

Another thing I enjoyed is how often problems are solved through strategy rather than force.
Salvor Hardin especially embodies this idea. His famous belief that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent fits perfectly with the kind of civilization the Foundation is becoming.

Foundation is very different from the science fiction I've been reading lately.
It isn't particularly emotional, and its characters sometimes feel less important than the ideas they represent. Normally that might bother me.
Here, strangely, it didn't.

For me, Foundation earns a 92/100. Its greatest strength is not emotional attachment to individual characters, but the sheer scale of its ideas. Psychohistory, the decline of the Galactic Empire, the Seldon Plan, and the use of knowledge as power made me want to keep thinking about the book after I finished it.
I wouldn't give it a perfect score because I did miss having characters I could become deeply attached to. But as a novel about civilizations, ideas, and the forces that shape history, it's remarkable.
Para mí, Foundation merece un 92/100. Su mayor fortaleza no está en el vínculo emocional con personajes individuales, sino en la enorme dimensión de sus ideas. If Hari Seldon already calculated humanity's future... are the people of the Foundation actually creating history, or simply following it?
