Watching X-Men today feels surprisingly nostalgic. It comes from a time when superhero movies were much simpler, before enormous cinematic universes became the norm. What I still enjoy is that the movie spends more time introducing these characters and their conflicts than trying to overwhelm us with action.

For me, Wolverine is easily the character who steals the movie. Hugh Jackman gave Logan exactly the personality he needed: aggressive, sarcastic and mysterious, but with a much softer side that slowly appears through his relationship with Rogue.

But what makes X-Men interesting even now is the conflict between Xavier and Magneto. They both want a better future for mutants, yet their experiences have led them toward completely different solutions. Magneto especially feels like much more than a typical villain, and Ian McKellen gives him an incredible presence.

Some effects and action scenes obviously show their age, but I think the movie's personality survives. More than two decades later, it's still fun to return to the moment when Wolverine extended his claws and this version of the X-Men entered the cinema for the first time.
