Schlumbergera—What?! 🧐……..My Actifit Report Card: October 16 2026

TGIF 😎 I hope your Friday has been awesome!

Schlumbergera—what?! Sounds like that might should be something pasta-like to eat! However, it’s not!

Most of us think of this…….

….as a Christmas cactus. I learned tonight however that this is actually a Thanksgiving cactus! Say what? That was pretty much my reaction! A Schlumbergera truncata, is actually a Thanksgiving cactus. What’s the difference you ask? Here’s a screenshot of one of my chats with ChatGPT.

Apparently, the pointedness of the segments indicates a Thanksgiving cactus and the more rounded segments is the true Christmas cactus. Who knew? Anyway, they are native to South America—Brazil to be specific; in the coastal rainforest. It grows on the surfaces of trees or rocks in shady, humid areas. Typically, the plant grows 12”-24” in height and width and can live for decades.

They are easily propagated. ChatGPT says absolutely! Here’s what it said:

Twist off a healthy stem cutting consisting of two or three joined segments. Let the cut end dry for several hours. Insert the bottom segment about half an inch into a lightly moist, well-draining potting mix. Place it in bright, indirect light and keep the mix slightly moist, not wet. Give it several weeks to establish roots before treating it like a mature plant. You can grow several new plants from a single healthy plant, which makes it a lovely gift for family and friends.

Sounds fairly easy. I might have to give it a try. This plant I have at work is close to 10 years old. I have another here at home which I believe is a true Christmas cactus as it’s segments are rounded like shown in the screenshot earlier in the post.

Today I decided to do some macro-type shots. One is a bit blurry but the other one is nice! Here’s the first—not a super macro shot but going in…..

Here’s the slightly blurry one….

And, the better one. Who knew there was that much pollen!!

So fuzzy looking! Each bloom reminds me of tempura shrimp on a stick. I don’t have a pic of the full bloom up close, but each one is about 3-ish inches long. Quite pretty!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little plant lesson. Which kind do you have—the Christmas or Thanksgiving variety?

That’s gonna be it for me. Take care and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌏🙏

BSB 1 Timothy 2:1-6

First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone— for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity. This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony that was given at just the right time.

🙏🌹
