The Quiet Anxiety of Earning a Living

Most of us have several things we secretly fear, even when we don't divulge our thoughts to anyone. If I were to guess the random things we fear then we'd have things like the fear of death/dying and all health related concerns, fear of losing someone we love and a whole lot of economic fears.

The economic fears are rather more interesting to me because unlike the first two fears I mentioned, which remain present and valid throughout our lifetime, economic fears do not really leave our minds, not unless we are incredibly fortunate or privileged from the get go. Even then, we've seen a few people who have fallen from economic grace because of poor choices.

My most pronounced economic fear right now is a potential job loss. While that doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon, it is a fear I always harbour at the back of my mind. Am a bit paranoid, but what is scary is how financially and perhaps emotionally unprepared I am to cope with such a circumstance.

I've thought on several occasions about starting my own small business and going all out, but so far nothing has really enthused me or can replace the current salary I receive, especially at the beginning stage. I so much envy those who built their own businesses, at least they don't have my fears I always say.

Am not naive to not realize that everyone has some level of concern regarding their economic future. No one really wants to struggle when the responsibilities start piling up, or when we no longer have the strength to push for our dreams. Uncertainty has always been part of our evolution, and perhaps it is a necessary wage we pay to have the human experience.
