A moment of relaxation, a moment of calm – August’s theme

This is my contribution to this community’s theme of the month: A moment of relaxation, a moment of calm – August’s theme
I’d like to give a special shout-out to @avdesing for the suggestion, and to all my friends in this wonderful community. I’d also like to invite @vezo and @sacra97 to join this initiative.
For many years, I’ve used music with specific Solfeggio frequencies to relax or meditate (to be honest, I’m not really sure what that means). Specifically, the 432 Hz and 528 Hz frequencies are said to be helpful for combating anxiety.
I’ve also turned to music featuring Delta or Theta waves, though today I’m going to highlight channels that include binaural music in their playlists.
Although this music is sometimes presented as EMDR, as I will explain later, bilateral music is not EMDR.
Regarding EMDR, it can be said that, as a form of psychotherapy, it has a vast amount of empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness in cases of trauma.
EMDR sessions initially focused solely on eye movements, over time the technique incorporated skin stimulation and auditory stimulation.
Thanks to this integration of sound into the framework of EMDR sessions, bilateral music is now also referred to as EMDR.
The theory holds that this type of music, by alternating sounds between the left and right ears and vice versa, intermittently stimulates each hemisphere of the brain. This helps balance brain activity. This balance is associated with states of calm and tranquility.
I’m not sure if this is the mechanism that explains the effectiveness of these recordings, but based on my practice, what I can assure you is that they can be very useful for calming the mind and body.

Sound Energy Alchemist

According to the information on YouTube, the creator behind this channel is a therapist, musician, and the composer of the channel’s tracks.
The first thing I want to emphasize is that for these videos to be effective, you need to listen to them with headphones. This is essential if we want the bilateral brain stimulation to work.
Sound Energy Alchemist is a great YouTube channel with 274,000 well-deserved subscribers.
Not all the videos are “EMDR”; within the playlists section, there’s a whole repertoire of alternatives for relaxation.
The channel’s only problem—and this isn’t unique to it—is the misinformation it spreads about EMDR therapy.
The video descriptions state that:
Bilateral music helps the brain process stress or traumatic memories, allowing the person to reflect on them without experiencing intense anxiety or stress. Bilateral music calms, relaxes, and soothes the mind, body, and spirit.
Several objections must be raised here.
EMDR treatment consists of 8 phases, only one of which is bilateral stimulation (eyes, ears, or skin).
With this type of video, no traumatic experience should be (nor is it) reprocessed.
If this were the case, we would be overwhelmed by unpleasant feelings and images. Finally, scientific evidence shows that bilateral sounds are of little use in reprocessing trauma.
These observations do not imply that these types of videos are not useful—quite the contrary. It is precisely because we do not relive the trauma that they are useful for relaxation.
Therefore, these types of videos can be very helpful, although they are not a substitute for therapy.
The video I’m presenting as an example of what this channel offers—in addition to how useful it can be because of its binaural beats—is a visual delight, just like all of this creator’s videos. They’re truly mesmerizing.

Vibraciones Curativas

The creator of this channel is Travis, a content creator who, by alternately striking his glass bowls—left-right / right-left—manages to create musical atmospheres that are both fascinating and relaxing. A regular companion in his videos is his cat, who is usually seen looking more than relaxed.
This channel is also very large, with 914,000 subscribers—a well-deserved achievement.
The videos are visually elegant, and the immersive music he performs is incredibly soothing.
The channel’s only issue, once again, is the use and mention of EMDR therapy as a hook to attract more listeners. Travis explains the following:
*EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a scientifically supported therapy that alleviates symptoms of trauma, anxiety, and depression. 🧠💫 It is based on bilateral stimulation: the rhythmic activation of the left and right hemispheres of the brain to help reprocess distressing memories and calm emotional responses. *
I’ve already explained that EMDR therapy consists of eight phases, with bilateral stimulation being just one of them. In addition to the videos misleadingly labeled “EMDR,” there’s also a large collection of other equally useful videos.

Jorge Henderson Collazo

This channel is the smallest of the three I’m featuring, but it’s my favorite—perhaps because it’s the most jazzy.
It’s “small,” even though it has 33,000 subscribers and a very active community; the video I’m featuring has over 15,000 likes, which are also well-deserved.
Although I think Jorge Henderson Collazo’s channel repeats the same mistakes as other channels (his videos aren’t EMDR), in this case—as with Sound Energy Alchemist—it could be justified.
These two creators are listed in their channel descriptions as licensed therapists, so any visitor to the channel can always consult them with some assurance regarding any questions or problems, knowing they’re, in principle, qualified professionals.
I have to add that I find it very interesting and very wise that Jorge Henderson Collazo has included instructions for use in the description of each video.
Sometimes, relaxation opens doors and emotions, ideas, or memories may surface that can be surprising or unsettling; having this listening guide with each video is a great idea.
That’s all for now—I hope you’ve enjoyed these creators.
If you found the constant warnings I’ve included throughout the text a bit tedious, I apologize, though I believe it’s necessary to make clear the limitations of each tool at our disposal.
This selection of videos ends here with three creators—who, in my opinion, are very good—who share excellent and useful work.
In a few days, I’ll introduce some other channels.

Gracias por acompañarme hasta aquí.
Thank you for joining me here.
