I wrapped my handbag around me to shield myself from the drizzle on my way home; the bus dropped me off at the stop. The drizzle was light, romantic but dangerous; sudden changes in the weather can easily lead to catching a cold. I finally arrived home after a sudden downpour; I wished it had turned into that characteristic cold, but it was the sort of rain where you can feel the steam rising from the ground…

I found traces of damp in my home; upon entering the bathroom, I could see pieces of the ceiling moulding on the floor, hanging precariously from the electrical wiring. I carefully finished removing them and wondered: ‘Why did my mother spend money on this if it was just going to fall down?’ Fortunately, the ceiling was sound; with all these earthquakes, everything comes loose…

Patiently, I gathered up every piece of debris and, as I walked down the corridor, I felt grateful for the here and now. At my age, and given everything that’s happened, it’s time to always opt for what’s practical, achievable and comfortable. Little by little, I’ll remove all the panelling and uncover the ceiling itself; the damp needs to be dealt with from above, and I didn’t want to put pressure on myself – I’ll do it when my finances allow.

And I remembered… that flowers bloom even in winter; even when it’s raining, you can see something beautiful, you can feel it and allow yourself to feel it… I associate this with sadness; we’ll always have some reason or memory to smile and be grateful for.

On my walks I always come across fire hydrants, and today I found one that, strangely, was behind bars, as if it had committed a crime. Whilst taking the photograph, I spoke to it as if it were going to answer me – it’s not that I’m mad; I just like to meditate by talking to myself. I asked questions: ‘What sin did you commit to be locked up?’ Or perhaps it’s because they’re trying to protect you. From whom? Who’s going to care about a fire hydrant? The answer might be to protect it from vandals, but so many of the fire hydrants I’ve seen just show signs of age – and, of course, people who love to stuff rubbish inside them if they find them uncovered.

‘Who has the key?’ I wondered. I also wondered whether, if there were an emergency and they needed it, I very much doubt the fire brigade would have the key to that prison…

Reflecting on this, I remembered my past self and gave thanks for my freedom. A hydrant was made to be free, even if it’s bolted to the ground or a wall, but bars? How many years did I spend in my own prison? Sometimes we build a glass prison—the kind we construct out of fear and pressure, from those relationships that restrict you even in your freedom of speech.

Today, the traces of the rain show themselves in me; I’ve caught a cold. I’m grateful for the peace, the freedom and the roof that shelters me, the flowers I find along the way that make me smile, the weather that’s gone mad and is misunderstood—at least there’s one thing I do know, and that is that the sun will rise again.

May you always be well.

Thank you for reading.

God bless you.
