The Entitled

You're never going to get anywhere with them.

Not long ago I came across a post that was tragicomic, but only to those who have a bit of education and decency, not for the rest. The poster was sharing a story about the unlucky situation they find themselves in and how their geo-location is blocking them from good paying opportunities.

Depending on where you live obviously, but most of us are facing some kind of restrictions, limitations from time to time. Some more, some less and I think this is going to get worse for several reasons, but more about this later.

Back to the story, the poster was complaining about being banned from participating in a paid survey, due to being located in a third world country, that has the worst reputation, having the most scammers and abusers the world has ever seen. They are inventive and resourceful though, you have to give them that, so the person in question jumped to the most obvious solution everyone uses, which is using a service to change their geo-location. Looks like the project owner was not born yesterday either, as the app necessary for the task could not be downloaded from where the poster tried to, not even using tricks.

What was really shocking here was the level of the entitlement of the person, stating they are denied opportunities they deserve, refusing to see reality and understanding what happened and why.

First of all, I see two reasons some countries are denied from participating in different projects. The first and most obvious one is that there's a history of abuse and misleading, that led to this ban. Knowing the country the user comes from, I bet 99.99% this is the case. The other reason could be the survey creator does not need data from that country, region, which is very likely as well.

Knowing you are a citizen of a country full of scammers, cheaters, thieves and so on, can be painful and gives you the chance to paint yourself as a victim, I understand that, but when you're trying to use VPN to hide your geo-location and circumvent restrictions, you are not any better than those who are responsible for bringing your country in this situation. You're just as an abuser as the rest, you just can't see it as you think circumventing the ban is ok, in order to achieve your goal.

It's interesting how their mind works though. As I said, entitlement in this case was sky high, but they have never thought of the project that needs the data and would spend money on it. When you need reliable data, from specific region and you're paying heavy money for it, you have the right to set the rules. This is never important from the abuser's perspective. No wonder these countries will never make progress in any regard.

What is worrying is that the more restrictions and hardship they are facing in their country of origin, the more they are determined to leave, to emigrate to a country where they think life is better. This is happening as we speak and some countries are already paying the price for allowing them in. Growing up always cutting corners, cheating and looking for shortcuts can take you so far and people rarely change. There's always a justification why they do what they do, an excuse, or better said, a lot of excuses, they even believe what they are trying to shove down your throat and will never make the effort to do the right thing.

Building something you have no clue of has become available these days. Artificial intelligence is doing the work for you, faster and better than any human, it's not flawless. You need to know what you're doing, think like a hacker, an abuser, if you want your project safe and shield yourself from abusers.

The entitlement mindset is strong. I sometimes fall into that mindset, like when I didn't get all of the cards I wanted in the Pokémon packs I bought. I got great cards, but my first thought was why I didn't get what I wanted. After a few minutes, I remembered it's all random chance and to be happy with what I got and realize I'm at least able to buy singles of what I didn't pull.

Every time you see a weird or super strict rule at a store or workplace, you know it's only there because one guy tried to abuse the system and ruined the trust for everyone else.
