Hello everyone. I took this photo in one of the largest black markets in Havana, where I came across this Black-crowned Night Heron (which birdwatchers in Cuba call guaco). It was captured in the province of Guantánamo and illegally transported here to be sold for 5,000 Cuban pesos. Its alleged owner is proud to share this, and no authority does anything despite reports of bird smuggling. It is disgusting how the disorder in the country is making these types of situations look increasingly normal and seen as a way to survive the crisis. This is a young guaco, and they are extremely important in their natural habitat as biological controllers.

Hola a todos. Esta foto la tomé en uno de los mercados negros más grandes en La Habana, donde me encontré con esta Garza Nocturna Negra (a la que los pajareros en Cuba le llaman guaco). La capturaron en la provincia de Guantánamo y la trasladaron ilegalmente hasta aquí para venderla por 5 000 pesos cubanos. Su supuesto dueño está orgulloso de contar esto y ninguna autoridad hace nada a pesar de las denuncias de contrabando de aves. Es desagradable cómo el desorden que hay en el país está haciendo que estos tipos de sitiaciones se vean cada vez más como algo normal y una forma de sobrevivir a la crisis.
Este es un guaco joven y son importantísimos en su hábitat natural como controladores biológicos.
