Lava Crystal (New digital illustration)

IN copia.jpg

Here is a look behind the process of illustrating this character. From the start, the main idea was to play with the contrast between the intensity of glowing lava and the serenity of the face, making sure each crystal gem felt like it was burning from within.

Sketch and Symmetry I started by blocking out the basic structure in Photoshop using the Huion Kamvas 22. I focused on achieving a near-perfect balance in the horns and tiara, setting the position of the main crystals across the forehead, chest, and sides so the overall composition felt grounded and centered.

Color Palette and Thermal Contrast To make the figure pop without overwhelming the image, I worked with a balance of cool and warm tones:

Dark Base: The deep, near-black tone of the horns mimics volcanic rock or basalt.

Hair: An organic gradient transitioning between blue and orange to introduce a subtle yet compelling color break.

Background: Cool tones and soft geometric lines that frame the character without stealing the spotlight.

4.jpg Face and Volume I built up the skin using soft brushwork to create realistic volume around the cheekbones, nose, and lips, maintaining a calm yet magnetic expression. I painted the eyes in vivid warm shades to connect her gaze with the energy of the rest of the piece.

6.jpg The Magmatic Crystal Effect The lava gems are the core of this artwork. I crafted the effect by layering elements:

An intense base of yellows and deep oranges.

Fine line work defining the cracks and fissures within the crystal.

Brightness and lighting layers using blending modes to generate that inner glow, giving the impression of trapped heat.

IN copia.jpg Polishing and Atmosphere To finish it off, I cleaned up the edges of the silhouette, enhanced the highlights along the crystal facets, and adjusted the background values to tie the whole piece together.
