Going Low Tech

My coffeemaker stopped brewing. Dear husband the Professor purchased it for me about 5 years ago as a small compensation for having to live in the communist state of Illinois for a few years. After we did our troubleshooting (one machine, two engineers) we determined the problem was not one we could fix with parts on hand.

I then started thinking: How many coffeemakers did my Granny ever have ? The answer: one!

This sent me to Amazon to look for a non-electric percolator to use on my gas stove. Just like Granny. I found a stainless steel model for under $30.

This pot is so easy to use and to clean. All the stainless steel innards can be removed and cleaned. No more running vinegar through a black box and wondering if any of the plastic inside is growing mold or bacteria.

Best of all? The coffee I am making now tastes great! Better than any digital or electric I have had. Sometimes we don't need more technology. Sometimes we need just enough tech.

I've never seen one of those before! And I don't know a great deal about brewing coffee. My parents didn't drink coffee; they drank Postum. If I smelled coffee when I woke up in the morning, it meant my uncle had come to visit, but I don't remember how he went about brewing it. I bought an old aluminum (?) percolator from a yard sale long ago. I only got it out when coffee-drinking visitors came, but it finally died on the last day of one of my mother-in-law's visits, perhaps 20 years ago. I replaced it with a new coffee maker (maybe a Gevalia?) but the glass carafe got broken. I guess I don't own a coffee maker any more.

I use an older Mr. Coffee drip machine I bought at a garage sale for a couple dollars. It has lasted longer than some brand-new machines. I also have a French press for when I just use boiled water, which can be done on a stovetop, but it's more for camping. If I ever do go stovetop, I'd like to get a Moka pot, but I think the Mother Thing has an old percolator squirreled away in storage that I should try, too. My parents never drank coffee, and I think they just had it on hand in case guests wanted to brew something.
