Portrait created with colored pencils based on a damaged photograph. [ENG-ESP]

Hello, dear friends at Hive DIY; I hope you are all doing well. Today, I want to share a commission I received. The project came about because of a damaged photograph: the owner of the original portrait noticed it was deteriorating. Parts of the image were compromised—specifically, the ink was flaking off—due to both the passage of time and the fact that the protective glass releases an acid that damages photographs. I was asked to create a reproduction of the portrait, but larger and in color. So, here is how I went about it.

PROCESS

First, I determined the dimensions for the portrait: 40 by 30 centimeters. The paper is heavy-weight Fabriano; it is thick enough to handle oil paint, acrylics, watercolors, and even soft pastels. The surface holds up well, even with wet media. I created a sketch using very light lines that would be easy to erase once I started painting with wax-based colors.

Since this is a very old portrait, the expression lines aren't very pronounced, so there is no need to worry about those kinds of details; however, the proportions must be accurately interpreted to ensure a good representation. I wouldn't call my style strictly hyper-realistic, but I always try to maintain the underlying structure of the drawing. Here, I am gradually shaping the face using nothing but very soft layers of color, working from the eyes to the skin of the face.

Next, I begin adding the second layer of color, applying each shade to its corresponding area. This is particularly important for the skin of the face; since the original portrait is in sepia, I use various pastel tones here to better render the skin. I also add more color to features that were already drawn, such as the eyes, nose, and mouth.

The great thing about this paper is that it allows for layering like no other; even when using colored pencils, applying multiple layers builds up the drawing's volume without compromising the paper's integrity. Here, you can see the fully formed portrait, created by following the original.

Now, having finished applying the color layers—three in total—I begin blending the entire drawing. I start with the face, using a small brush, and then switch to a larger brush for the rest of the piece. The reason for this switch is to avoid smudging the skin with any dark pigment remaining on the brush used to blend the hair. With this process complete, the drawing is finished.

What do you think of the result? Now all that's left is to frame it; I'm still choosing the type of wood to ensure the person who commissioned the piece is happy with it. I really appreciate you taking the time to read my post and follow along with the entire process—it’s one of the things I enjoy doing most. For now, I’ll sign off, but I hope to be back very soon with a new project and more creativity. Best regards to everyone!
