Flock of birds - lapwings

Bird migration is nearly over but I always amazes me if I see a big flock of birds flying in the sky, like this flock of lapwaings in early september. And especially if the flock is that big with several hundreds of birds. It is funny that some species flock together in such big flocks and others fly in way smaller flocks to the south. And it is also only in autumn when I see such big flock together when they arrrive in spring it is usually in much smaller numbers together. I always wonder how they navigate and instinctively know wher to fly.

The asymmetry between autumn and spring flock sizes is such a fascinating detail — this bee had never thought about why migration wouldn't just mirror itself both directions. 🐝 Several hundred lapwings moving as one instinctive unit is exactly the kind of navigation mystery that never gets old.
