They say distance destroys what isn’t solid, but with true friendships, it does exactly the opposite: it makes them timeless.

Spending 365 days separated by borders is erased in a matter of seconds when you run into that person again—the one who knows your mannerisms without needing words. Two weeks ago, I experienced that magic. My friend came to visit her family, and amid the chaos of her trip, she set aside a couple of hours just for the two of us.

We started our get-together in a yellow corner where hot pasta and garlic bread served as an excuse to catch up. In front of the mirror there, amid laughter and photos we took together, I realized that time had stood still. Then we moved on to a pastry shop—a sweet, elegant spot where we shared an incredible chocolate flan and exchanged those knowing glances on the sofa that only come after years of sincere affection.
It was just a few hours. A breath of fresh air in the midst of the daily grind. We talked, we laughed, we hugged, and we realized that time never passes—that life remains unchanged when I’m reunited with my beloved friend. Enjoying myself and receiving so much love and affection from her makes me feel loved and happy.

When it was time to say goodbye, the lump in my throat was inevitable. It’s bittersweet: on the one hand, you feel the gentle sadness of seeing her leave again; on the other, the comforting certainty that distance is merely a geographical detail, and that I know perfectly well she’s better off in her other country, that she’s doing well, that she has the life she always wanted—and that makes me happy even amid the sadness of seeing her go. Good friendships don’t depend on how often you see each other, but on the strength with which they hold up when you finally meet again. I’m left with the sweet taste of dessert, our shared laughter, and the peace of mind that, no matter how many kilometers separate us, our safe place remains intact.
