When healing becomes torture
"Not everything can be explained, not everything has an answer, it doesn’t make sense, not everything is fair and not everything is logical" (Author unknown)
Hello, friends of Holus Lotus. As usual, I’m sharing a reflective piece on healing in today’s world and how, rather than setting us free, it can end up mentally torturing us.
Why do I say this?
Because these days everything is about healing, mental health, depression and anxiety, and whilst it’s true that this is a reality, everything must happen in its own time and at each person’s own pace. On social media, we’re bombarded with so much information that there comes a point where we start to believe our lives are rubbish because we’re not doing something for ourselves
and that’s when, unconsciously, we can start to become obsessed and forget to live.
Because we’ve turned our wellbeing into a list of ‘shoulds’, where we analyse every emotion and thought and try to understand everything, but we forget to live and to feel
And so we end up believing that we’re taking a step backwards when we feel down, but we must understand that sooner or later everything falls apart – and that’s not pessimism, but a human reality
Mental health isn’t really measured by feeling fine all the time or having the perfect answer for everything; rather, mental health consists of recognising our own limits and accepting that there are days when we can’t cope with everything, and that this doesn’t mean we’re doing something wrong or that we aren’t brave enough.
And in therapy, I learnt this when I realised that it’s OK to feel down, and it was a strange realisation for someone like me, who had always been used to supporting my friends and offering words of encouragement when, deep down, I was so afraid of feeling and accepting my own struggles.
Of course, there are times in our lives when we need to understand what is happening to us and heal from it, but we don’t always have to look for a purpose behind it; things simply happen in life for which we are never prepared.
That is why trying to find meaning in everything can lead us to torment ourselves, and we end up forgetting how to feel – because in life there won’t always be an answer that fits our reality.
Perhaps that is what causes us to suffer so often.
But healing involves accepting reality just as it is.
Because our wellbeing shouldn’t become yet another demand, but rather a conscious choice where we bring together body, mind, soul and heart, and from there come to understand ourselves better.
Let’s not let life pass us by whilst trying to understand everything; instead, let’s cultivate acceptance.
Take it from me: I resisted so much, wanting to find an answer to almost everything, that I ended up in therapy to gradually leave that need behind.
Thank you for reading; I hope you’ve enjoyed this reflection.
