I've learned a thing or two over my life and those learnings have not always come the easy way; value can come from adversity for sure but, of course, we have the ability to learn from so many sources and I reckon it's best to learn when and where possible as a better present and future is usually the result.

Here's some learnings that have helped me most in no particular order:

Sleep: Learn to fall asleep faster and get sufficient sleep; yes, it's a learned skill. Without proper sleep a person doesn't function at their peak.

Control inputs: Guard your mind carefully because what you put in can weaken focus and drain motivation. Social media drains the brain and dulls it - Find better inputs because that's what will create better outputs.

Two is one and one is none: Be prepared for when things fail because things will certainly fail at times. Preparedness in all things trumps bumbling along and hoping.

Make your bed as soon as you're out of it: It's less about the bed and more about completing the day's first task well. It sets the tone for the rest of the day - good habits are good.

Use the phonetic alphabet: I do this all the time because I hate having to repeat words, spelling my name and so on. It's about being clear-minded and delivering clarity to others and that seeps into other aspects of life. Learn it and use it.

Select your intel: Choose what information sources you draw from because information can be damaging especially when incorrect. The "news" and social media is just propaganda and noise - find better sources and don't be gullible. Find sources that are genuinely worth learning from.

After Action Review: Ask yourself what should have happened, what actually happened, why and what to change next time. This process of AAR can extend to every aspect of life whether a positive or negative outcome occurred. Trust me on this one, it's gold.

Keep time: Early is on time. I work on the premise that being somewhere on time is late so I'm always early which, for me, means on time. Being punctual demonstrates discipline, reliability and attention to detail and it shows respect for other people's time.

Tomorrow tonight: I always set out my clothing, equipment, lunch if required and other such things the night before. It leaves time and mental capacity in the morning (often very early starts for me) and that means I'm more ready for whatever comes - less decision-making around basic things and more focus on the task or day ahead.

Do the roll: I fly around for work a lot and always roll my clothes. More fits in with less wrinkles (so smaller luggage) and only one thing comes out when I tug on it. This one ties in with the tomorrow tonight thing as it's about organisation and preparation. Forward planning can help minimise complications in the moment.

One of these things in isolation isn't going to change your life but by combining a few - and other things - together they make life more effective and enjoyable and it'll progress down the paths you choose more efficiently. Not everyone will do them and that's ok, not everyone will succeed and progress at the rate of others...and many will fail too.

Hey, you're back! Good to read you.

Many of the points I could just C&P. Little differences, of course - I let my bed ventilate before I make it. But I try to have it done before I get out of the house to work, or before I sit down for work, depending on the day.

The phonetic alphabet is something I was surprised about. Have never thought about it, but I'll look into it as I'm often misunderstood, and spelling my name here in Ecuador is a nightmare because even when imitating their phonetics they spell it wrongly. Maybe not because I pronounce it badly, but they don't really pay attention or don't care, but maybe I could improve by getting my head into Ecuadorian Spanish phonetics. The alphabet might help there.

  • Most of them are my thing too, phonetic alphabet expecially on phone, they are all basically common sense... I lack with sleep, life so stressful nowadays... And sorting the bed when I wake up, I barely have time to piss with the kid, when he wakes up it's a hurricane

There you are! Didn't know if we had to call out a search party or not. :)

Yeah, all good learnings and apply almost all of them to this day. Except sleep and controlling inputs. Until recently, sleep was foreign to me. Finally getting some decent sleep. Then there is controlling inputs. Have a bad habit of listening to the different media outlets.

I do follow most of them. It is a good way to live discipline life. What i lack is stopping myself from getting into others matter. Only end up realizing that I am a fool.

I need to learn to do the roll a bit more. I can definitely see the benefits of it. I just haven't put it into practice. I have a bit of a weird last name, and I know I don't enunciate well, so the phonetic alphabet has been a staple for me for quite some time now. I also grew up with a dad who thinks if you are on time you are late, so getting to places early has been another staple for me. This was a great list!

  • Learning to sleep is so difficult, in fact, can you even learn it? There's been nights where I've tossed and turned and still couldn't sleep, and I wasn't even stressed or anything.

I like to air my bed for a little while before it make it, though that can be difficult if you're rushed to get out in the morning. But yeah, definitely make your bed, not only does it set the tone for the day, but also how people see you. I once went to house tour my friend's place, their bed was so messy, I saw another side of them.

It’s incredible how many, or even all, of these guidelines, when combined, can help in everyday life. I always make my bed when I get up, I always arrive early wherever I’m going, and I lay out my clothes the night before. Being prepared for the unexpected and looking after my mental wellbeing are things I practise, and above all, I analyse my decisions and actions so I can make any necessary changes. I’ve learnt most of these lessons both from my own experiences and from observing others and the results they’ve achieved.

You're a man after me own heart, sure ya are. I'm a divil for the auld phonetic alphabet, I'm forever early, I always prep the night before and I learned the roll in the 1970s from Judith Chalmers on a British TV travel programme called Wish you were here and I've never forgotten it.
