A CHOICE OF COURAGE

Starting again is one of the bravest decisions anyone can make, whether in a career, a friendship, a relationship, or a business. It is always better than giving up. Whenever you find the courage to begin anew, you triumph over failure, fear, and disappointment. Many people long for a fresh start, some don’t have the finance, the courage, the fear of being mocked and the anxiety of taking that first step keep them held back.

I am reminded of my Neighbour, Mama Blessing, who was trapped in a toxic marriage years ago. Her husband abused her almost daily, ignoring whosoever is around at time, the shame it brings to her. She would run to our house for safety, but whenever he came back after few hours begging, she would return to him as if nothing happened earlier. My mother constantly warned her not to let him ruin her life, that her husband should not kill her with all this constant beating, but she always replied, "Who will take care of my children if I leave?" This painful cycle went on for years until one fateful day. After a heated argument, her husband began hitting her as usual, expecting her to flee. But this time, she stood her ground and fought back. Seeing the commotion, neighbors rushed in to defend her. Right then and there, she made her decision. She packed her belongings and walked out leaving the children behind, realizing she had to save herself first.

From that incident, I realized that starting again is entirely a mindset. It is a personal choice. If your mind isn't truly made up, no amount of advice from others will move you, we need to ignored the past and think of what await us in the future. Mama Blessing had to let go of her past, ignore the shame, and push past the fear of judgment.

Walking away from a toxic marriage, an unhealthy friendship, or anything dragging you down is not a sign of failure. Taking that bold step simply means you are choosing a new chapter. To society, we must stop judging those who choose to begin again, stop Judging someone we don’t know their stories, and instead of detaching from them, mocking them, we should offer our support, love, care to anyone brave enough to start start again, to start a new phase. Life can happen to anyone, because it’s so unpredictable. Image from pexels
