Thank you for passing by

Six years of Hive. A decade of the platform.

"Can you promise that I will come back?" "No. And if you do, you will not be the same." - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I'm a Hive witness, and one of the core developers of the platform. I've spent nearly a decade making sure the chain keeps producing a block every three seconds - through every update, every crisis. You don't see most of it. The patches at 02:00, the nodes moved because a datacenter had "unexpected maintenance" (on a holiday, naturally), the coordinated updates where twenty people have to do the right thing at the right time and hope nobody's cat walks across their keyboard. The boring stuff and the exciting stuff. Keeping the lights on, moving things forward, and making sure the platform stays secure and reliable.

Grey Wanderer

A diffusion-based generative model guided by a prompt generated by Claude Code from an input materials provided by me.

Over the past decade, I've crossed paths with amazing people from this community while visiting different countries. Mexico. Peru. Portugal. Netherlands. Luxembourg. Germany. Austria. Croatia. Thailand. Singapore. Malaysia. Indonesia. Japan. Some came to Poland for HiveBeeCon - twice now - because when HiveFest moves to the other side of the planet, you do what any reasonable(?) wizard would do and host your own gathering ;-) Others visited me for a walk or talk, or building a snowman.

I won't try to list everyone. I'd need a whole separate post and I'd still miss someone. You know who you are. And maybe I even miss you.

A decade is long enough for a platform to become a crossroads.

People arrived, stayed for a while, left their mark. Some built things. Some broke things. Not everyone who passed through left the place better than they found it. But enough of them did. Some moved on to other projects, other passions, other chapters. Some are out there in corners of the world I can barely imagine. Some have passed away.

All of them left their marks in this immutable chain of blocks.

I still haven't powered down. Not once in a decade. And I'm glad to be in the company of friends, family, and fools who continue this exciting journey into our niche social, governance, economic, and technological experiment ;-)

I don't know what the next decade holds. I know the blocks keep coming every three seconds. I know there are people building things right now that I'll be writing about next year. But probably I won't because I'm bad at writing.

A decade. We made it this far. Good job everyone. Happy Hive Birth Day!

We are Hive. Thank you for passing by. (Well, most of you. ;-) )

my friend reading about your incredible journey of a decade shows such rare dedication to the hive ecosystem and reminds us that behind every block there is human passion and countless hours of unseen work

    thank you and keep going

Hi @gtg I hope your Anniversary month went well. A decade is a longtime to serve, Thank you for your service. I built some Z-cash miners a few years back, and then converted to mining Ethereum with the same six miners. It was fun, and I went from 2 to 10 GPU miners. I pushed the envelop a bit and really jacked up my electricity bill. My wife was very patient, and my kids had both moved out of the house, so I had two spare rooms LOL ! I eventually shut them down and found Steemit, and came here after the split. I have greatly enjoyed my time there and here. I have recently written a proposal for the DHF and I would greatly appreciate it if you could read some of it and give me feedback. It's a bit long , but I have included an index and hope the community will see it's utility. I know the price of Hive is a bit low now, but from where I sit there are so many exciting things going on that I can't help but be excited about the future of Hive, and I want to be a part of it. I have been here eight years, and seen a lot of changes, but feel like each year the changes get more exciting, more complex and have greater potential. Thank you. Proposal Link P.S. I need two people who are highly trusted in the Hive Community to to be one of three trusted active key holders, as part of the security program. I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me a few suggestions, perhaps 3-4 names, yours included, if you would be available and willing. The manager will manage the day to day events, the active key holders would be available for death or sickness of the manager, or to stop hacks or exploits they detect in the project. I intend to elicit the community at large to monitor the transactions on the hivecomunitybank account to encourage community ownership and surveillance. I don't know if the proposal will pass, but I am doing everything I can to prepare to do this properly . Thank you

I want to congratulate your presence here—and even more so, your persistence on this platform. You’re one of the pillars of this community, someone I voted for even though I didn’t know you, and today I’m glad I did. You’re a living example of how, when you want to achieve a goal, the only way forward is to stay the course. I hope to read more from you in the coming year, because even though you say you’re not good at writing, you’re actually doing a great job. A big hug, and once again... Congratulations!!

  • @zekepickleman(79)· 156d

Haha you are not bad at writing at all! That is a rather poetic post that sums up your last decade rather nicely.

Here's to all of that work contributing to a foundation for new growth, innovation and inclusion. Who knows what the next 10 years holds!!

the coordinated updates where twenty people have to do the right thing at the right time and hope nobody's cat walks across their keyboard.

I know quite a few folks have cats here. Never thought about the chain having “cat walk risk” 😆

Thanks for running a witness. I wish you the best with what you are working on in 2026!

That is not true. I think the wizard should write more often! Especially, posts lovely such as this one! Happy Hive anniversary! What a journey this has been! I am glad I got to see most of it with so many others :)

  • @mipiano(81)· 156d

  • @rishi556(72)· 157d

Wow it really has been a decade(almost for me, few more months).... So much has changed and yet, so much has stayed the same. Thank you for all the work you do keeping things alive. I do think I've become a better person due to Hive, and met some of the greatest people I know because of here! Here's to another decade.

  • @steevc(80)· 157d

It has been an epic journey with some monsters to fight along the way, but we are still here. Your efforts are much appreciated by many and the others ought to know what goes on behind the scenes. I've been on a few platforms that didn't last this long.

    Greetings from a Shire.
