[Movie] Killers of the Flower Moon 2023 Review [ESP-ENG]

Source

For me, Killers of the Flower Moon wasn’t just a movie I watched to find out who was behind the Osage murders rather, it prompted me to ask a deeper question: What could drive a person to choose money and power at the expense of the lives of those they claim to love? The film is set in 1920s Oklahoma, at a time when the Osage Nation had become wealthy following the discovery of oil on its lands. This wealth attracted people seeking to profit from it, and the story gradually reveals how greed can turn into betrayal and murder.

When Ernest Burkhart entered Mollie Kyle’s life, I didn’t immediately see him as someone who could simply be labeled as good or bad. That’s precisely one of the aspects that intrigued me the most. He comes across as a gentle man who wants to share his life with Mollie, but behind him stands his uncle William Hale, who gradually draws him into a plan far more extensive than Ernest truly understands. This led me to wonder: Was Ernest already a bad person to begin with, or did he become bad when he agreed to put his own interests and Hale’s advice above his conscience?

For me, Mollie was the most tragic character in the entire story. She lives in a world where many people judge her primarily by her wealth, even though she’s searching for something much simpler a family, love, and a life built on trust. When she meets Ernest, I get the impression that she truly opens up to him. But the film left me with this question: How can someone to whom you’ve entrusted your home and your heart become part of the danger that threatens you? That’s what makes their relationship even more painful than just a simple love story.

William Hale surprised me even more. He’s not the kind of person who readily reveals himself as the villain rather, he seeks to project the image of an influential man who is well integrated into the community and knows the Osage so well that he sometimes gives the impression of wanting to defend their interests. But when you look at his actions, it becomes clear that many of his decisions revolve around money and the rights associated with that wealth. To me, Hale represents the kind of person who exploits others’ trust to further his own interests.

What makes the film so heavy is not just what happens, but also the way events unfold while part of society remains silent. Murders take place, people disappear, and yet the local system sometimes seems reluctant to truly seek out the truth. This led me to ask myself another question: when a powerful person controls both the law and social relationships, who protects those who have no power? The film doesn’t offer a simple answer, and that’s precisely what made me think even more deeply about it.

I was also very interested in Ernest’s choices. Every time Hale asks him to do something new, Ernest is faced with a choice refuse and face the truth, or go along with the plan and get what he wants. What struck me was that his decisions don’t happen all at once they build up gradually. I realized from this that you don’t always become a bad person in a single moment, but that you can gradually get trapped in a series of decisions from which it then becomes difficult to escape.

When the federal investigation begins, the film takes a different turn. I then wondered whether justice ever arrives when we really need it. The investigators, particularly Tom White, begin to connect events that others had long overlooked. But when I see how far the situation had escalated before a real investigation even began, I feel that justice that comes too late can never fully restore what has been lost.

What struck me the most was Mollie’s situation as she gradually began to realize that many things around her weren’t what she had imagined. Even as her health deteriorated, the film made me reflect on the trust we place in those closest to us. If the person you trust the most is the very one who puts you in danger, how can you discover the truth? That question stayed with me for much of the film.

In the end when Ernest decides to tell the truth about Hale, I didn’t see that decision as something that could easily erase everything he had done before. He found himself responsible for part of what had happened, and the film clearly shows that regret doesn’t necessarily mean the damage can be repaired. Mollie ends up leaving Ernest, which struck me as particularly important love can have its limits, and when trust is broken, it sometimes can’t be rebuilt.

Taking a step back, I also realized that the film isn’t limited to Ernest, Mollie, and Hale. It deals with greed, racism, power, money, and how an entire community can be destroyed when certain people view the wealth of others as something they’re entitled to. That’s why Killers of the Flower Moon didn’t strike me as merely a historical film it raises a question that remains relevant today: What happens when money and power become stronger than compassion and justice?

Ultimately, Killers of the Flower Moon is a film I’ll remember not only for its events, but above all for the questions it left me with. In it, I saw love intertwined with personal interests, a family torn apart by betrayal, and a community whose wealth became a target. What struck me most was the way Scorsese pushed me to reflect on the actions themselves before simply judging those who commit them. The film showed me that the most dangerous person isn’t always the one who yells or shows anger sometimes, it’s a calm person who knows others well and understands exactly how to gain their trust. That’s what made me see this film as a story of greed, betrayed trust, and the value of choosing to do what’s right when money is right in front of you.

You're dealing with some very sensitive issues here—ones that have affected society for decades: greed, racism, power, and money. I can imagine how a community can be destroyed simply by wanting to take what isn't yours. On top of that, the person you love and trust poses the greatest danger.

I really like your point about Ernest. He is not simply a good or bad person from the beginning. His choices slowly push him into a terrible situation.
