[Movie] The Odyssey (2026) Review

Source

The Odyssey is a film that blends action, adventure, drama, and mythology, but what made it interesting to me wasn’t just the battles and the creatures. What really drew me in was Odysseus’s journey and the way he’s constantly forced to overcome new obstacles to return home. At first, I was expecting a grand adventure, but as the story unfolded, I realized that the film was really about a man capable of losing everything, yet holding on to a single reason to keep moving forward: returning home.

Ulysses returns from the Trojan War longing to return to Ithaca and his family. What I particularly appreciated about his character is that he isn’t a hero who always has everything under control. He is powerful and experienced, but new dangers—often greater than he could have imagined constantly stand in his way. This allowed me to really immerse myself in his journey, because I wanted to see how he would react to each situation, rather than follow a hero who never experiences failure.

When he encounters the Cyclops Polyphemus, the film truly shows the danger Odysseus finds himself in. For me, what was important in this part wasn’t just the monster itself, but above all the way Odysseus uses his wits when brute force is no longer enough. I then realized that his courage lies not only in his ability to fight, but also in his ability to keep his cool and find a solution when the situation becomes too much for him.

Next, his journey leads him to face the sirens and many other dangers. I enjoyed these scenes because the film constantly puts Odysseus in the face of a new challenge. Sometimes it’s a visible enemy, and sometimes it’s a challenge that directly affects his mind and emotions. That’s what makes his journey particularly interesting to me: Odysseus isn’t just fighting to survive he also has to come to terms with how this journey is transforming him.

When he meets Calypso, I felt like the story delved deeper into Odysseus’s humanity. He could find a place to rest, but his heart refuses to stay there. That made me realize that, for Odysseus, home isn’t just a place. Ithaca represents his family, his life, and everything he longs to return to. For me, this part was one of the most emotional moments in the film.

To me, the relationship between Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus is at the heart of the story. All the battles, dangers, and long journeys take on real meaning when I remember what he’s truly fighting for. Watching him relentlessly continue on his journey home, I felt that the greatest force that can drive a person forward isn’t always power or glory, but sometimes simply love and the desire to see his loved ones again.

I also really appreciated the weight of the responsibilities that rest on Odysseus as a leader. His decisions don’t just affect his own life; many men depend on him. So every time he has to make a decision, you can feel the enormous weight of that responsibility. This made me see Ulysses as a much more complex character than just a war hero. He possesses strength, but he also experiences mistakes, doubts, and difficult decisions that can sometimes end up backfiring on him.

As the film went on, I thought a lot about how a journey can transform a person. Ulysses begins his journey as a man returning from war, but every danger he faces takes away a part of the man he once was. For me, that’s one of the most interesting ideas in the film: sometimes, the greatest journey isn’t the distance you travel, but the person you become when you finally reach your destination.

I also appreciated the fact that The Odyssey isn’t just about action. Behind the creatures and the battles lie themes such as loyalty, family, loss, hope, and patience. The creatures and battles naturally grab your attention, but what truly gives the film meaning is the man behind all these events. For me, Odysseus became a character I rooted for not just because he’s a hero, but because I saw everything he was willing to endure to regain the life he’d been separated from.

In the end, The Odyssey wasn’t just a great film about mythology and adventure for me. It became a story about a man who faces everything, without ever forgetting where he wants to return. What I appreciated most was the way Odysseus is portrayed as a character who is both strong and vulnerable, while his journey becomes a greater ordeal than any battle he has ever faced. When the movie ended, one thought stayed with me: sometimes, home isn’t just the place where you live, but the people and memories for which you’re willing to face anything in order to find them again.

I still think, Cyclop did the right thing :)

First you invade his home - the cave, then you eat his food. So not acceptable. Lol, I am being a sadist.

Btw, when Odyseus goes for revenge and blinds him; it was satisfactory as well. He cared for his men.

    Good movie; good review!
