During the time I was working there, I saw very young girls, around 13 or 14 years old, who had been married off. Some were pregnant, and this situation saddened me deeply. For many nights, I couldn’t sleep as I thought about these young girls, wondering why they were being forced to take on responsibilities they weren’t yet ready for.
I asked myself this question: How can a young girl who still needs an education, care, and protection cope with married life and the responsibilities of motherhood? I also wondered why some parents marry off their daughters because of financial difficulties, without fully considering the consequences for their health and future.
Let’s take the example of a 13-year-old girl who should be in school and dreaming about her future. Instead, she may find herself facing pregnancy and childbirth while her body is still developing. Pregnancy at this age poses health risks and requires special medical care. Furthermore, a forced marriage can jeopardize her education and shatter her dreams.
Personally, I believe that poverty should never be a reason to deprive children of their childhood. Girls deserve to be protected, educated, and supported so that they can build a future for themselves. Parents should be the first to stand up for their daughters, not push them toward a life for which they are not ready.
I ask our society this question: Is a small sum of money earned today worth more than our daughters’ health, education, and future?
What I saw left me with a sadness that I cannot easily forget. I hope that parents and society as a whole will give this situation serious thought, so that our daughters can grow up safely and have a better future.
