[Movie] A Whisker Away: A cute but impactful anime/movie

Poster available at The Movie Database

I started watching Carrie, Mike Flanagan's new TV show based on King's creation. However, I still didn't finish season 1 so I am here to bring an experience with my kids. My daughter brought this movie called "A Whisker Away" to our Sunday movie afternoon. It looked cute. I girl that transform into a kitty. But in the end, it had so many young adulthood/full adulthood topics that made me cry! I think the kids didn't get all of them, so they stayed more with the romance and fantasy part of the anime/movie.

The movie isn't new is from 2020 and the length is about 1h44. Good length for a Sunday afternoon with kids, in my point of view. The story is about this teenager girl called Miyo or Muge (as she is called in school) that has some family trauma, since her mother left her with her daddy without minor explanation. This abandonment created a type of wall in her personality that is difficult to reach, especially for her stepmother, Kaoru, who tries everything to be a good person, but Miyo just doesn't want to create any bond with her. She is also crazy about this school guy called Kento, who ignores her. That changes when she gets a magical mask from a cat humanoid seller that transforms her into Taro, a cute white cat.

As a cat, Miyo/Taro can reach Kento more easily and creates a certain connection with him. She notices that Kento is also alone and can't communicate to his mother what he really wants for his life, being a pottery master like his grandfather and not a successful university student like her mother wants. Kento has so much trouble speaking what he wants that when we finally think that he will accept the love of Mio, he prefers to say that he hates her, which of course breaks her heart.

After the big adventure until Kento and Miyo finally comunicate each to each other and see that they both feel the same way. Miyo finally notices that there are people who really care about her despite her adding this wall to her stepmother. The movie talks about miscommunication and how we hide our feelings by suppressing them, making us alone when we didn't need to be like that. All the walls raised to protect us against outside threats in the end just isolate us.

I felt the movie hitting my heart since I put my shoes in characters like Kento, Miyo's father, and stepmother; and Miyo itself. It was nice to see everything resolve in the end between all of them despite all the suffering throughout the movie, but we know that in real life, most of the time, this path can be longer or even a never-ending story.

Many people believe that anime are meaningless cartoons, and while there may be some like that, I've learned that they all teach us a lesson, can move us to tears, and make us reflect on moments we may be experiencing or remind us of issues that still need to be resolved.
