During the last two weeks, I was visiting my parents in Brazil, and my parents rented an airbnb in Teresopolis. We stayed there for 5 days it was good to relax a bit there. The city is small but they added many restaurants which are interesting to visit and the local beer is also interesting. However, the biggest show there is the nature. It has been a while that I don't see toucans in the wild and I could see the two species that can be found in Brazil.
The First one that we spotted in the trees from our airbnb is probably the one that people are used to see in cartoons or tv. In portuguese we call them "Tucanuçu" or Toco Toucan. This is the biggest species and despite of how beautiful it is, originally isn't from the forest found in the Rio de Janeiro State. Yep, this one is considered a species that isn't from there originally; it's found in the Center of the country, like the Cerrado ecosystem. Because of the deflorestation these Toucans migrated more for Coastal Forests in Rio de Janeiro State. And since they are bigger and more agressive compared to the local toucans they have gained space and being a threat to local species.
The Ariel Toucan is smaller and it is even predated by the big Toco Toucan but it is the endemic species. We saw two of them around the Airbnb. It has a yellow chest and a smaller beak compared to the Toco Toucan. In addition to toucans, we saw smaller birds and also a big vulture that landed in one of the trees. On top of the nature I had also a nice experience with my wife, since the grandparents stayed with the kids. We went to the St.Gallen Biergarten. It is one of the most traditional local brewery from the city and they have a local production that grew with a restaurant and tastings.
Since I was there to try, I asked for the tasting experience of all available beers, it coast 59.90 Brazilian Reais roughly around 12 USD, but also the glasses are small. It came with the a Weissbier, Witbier, Red Ale, Dunkel and IPA. To Be frank the best beer for me was the IPA, and probably I would be happier just drinking it, but it was good to at least try all of them. My wife doesn't drink beer, but we ordered some food that was nice there maybe the best was the famous Brazilian pub appetizer Diced steak with sautéed onions, they made with a sauce with their beer which gave an amazing taste. The appetizer came also with the famous Farofa (cassava flour) and bread.
It was a good experience and the weather there is cooler compared to the city of Rio which make things better, since I am not used to the extreme heat in Rio. It is a nice place to relax, drink and eat. But not so cheap anymore.

Durante as últimas duas semanas, eu estava visitando meus pais no Brasil, e meus pais alugaram um airbnb em Teresópolis. Ficamos lá por 5 dias e foi bom para relaxar um pouco. A cidade é pequena, mas eles adicionaram muitos restaurantes que são interessantes de visitar e a cerveja local também é interessante. No entanto, o maior show lá é a natureza. Já faz um tempo que não vejo tucanos na natureza e pude ver as duas espécies que podem ser encontradas no Brasil.
O primeiro que encontramos nas árvores do nosso airbnb provavelmente é aquele que as pessoas estão acostumadas a ver em desenhos ou na TV. Em português, nós os chamamos de "Tucanuçu" ou Tucano-Toco. Esta é a maior espécie e apesar de ser muito bonita, originalmente não é da floresta encontrada no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Sim, esta é considerada uma espécie que não é originalmente de lá; ela é encontrada no centro do país, como no ecossistema do Cerrado. Por causa do desmatamento, esses tucanos migraram mais para as Florestas Costeiras no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. E como eles são maiores e mais agressivos em comparação com os tucanos locais, eles ganharam espaço e se tornaram uma ameaça para as espécies locais.
O Tucano-Ariel é menor e também é predado pelo grande Tucano-Toco, mas é a espécie endêmica. Vimos dois deles ao redor do Airbnb. Ele tem o peito amarelo e um bico menor em comparação com o Tucano-Toco. Além dos tucanos, vimos pássaros menores e também um grande urubu que pousou em uma das árvores. Além da natureza, também tive uma experiência agradável com minha esposa, já que os avós ficaram com as crianças. Fomos ao St.Gallen Biergarten. É uma das cervejarias locais mais tradicionais da cidade e ela tem uma produção local que cresceu com um restaurante e degustações.
Como eu estava lá para experimentar, pedi a experiência de degustação de todas as cervejas disponíveis, custou 59,90 Reais brasileiros, aproximadamente 12 USD, mas os copos também são pequenos. Veio com uma Weissbier, Witbier, Red Ale, Dunkel e IPA. Para ser sincero, a melhor cerveja para mim foi a IPA, e provavelmente eu ficaria mais feliz apenas bebendo ela, mas foi bom pelo menos experimentar todas. Minha esposa não bebe cerveja, mas pedimos algumas comidas que eram boas lá, talvez a melhor tenha sido o famoso aperitivo de boteco brasileiro, bife em cubos com cebolas salteadas, feito com um molho com a cerveja deles, que deu um sabor incrível. O aperitivo também veio com a famosa Farofa (farinha de mandioca) e pão.
Foi uma boa experiência e o clima lá é mais fresco comparado com a cidade do Rio, o que torna as coisas melhores, já que não estou acostumado com o calor extremo do Rio. É um lugar agradável para relaxar, beber e comer. Mas não é tão barato mais.
