Yesterday evening, I headed to the town market to buy some vegetables and fruits needed for our household. Although I grow several kinds of vegetables in my home garden, the harvest we get is not always enough to meet all our daily needs. Therefore, from time to time, we still need to visit the market and purchase the produce that we cannot grow in sufficient quantities at home.
For me, buying vegetables is not simply about choosing whatever looks attractive or has the lowest price. We need to have some knowledge about how to identify fresh and good-quality produce. The colour, firmness, freshness, smell, and overall appearance can tell us quite a lot about the quality of vegetables and fruits. Knowing how to make the right choices is especially important because these are foods that we bring home for our families to eat.
Growing vegetables at home has also taught me to appreciate the effort that goes into producing our food. When we grow something ourselves, we understand the importance of healthy soil, water, sunlight, care, and patience. That experience makes me more careful when selecting produce at the market as well. Whenever possible, I prefer vegetables and fruits that look fresh, clean, and naturally healthy.
While I was on my way to the market, something completely unexpected made the journey even more interesting. I happened to come across a beautiful Perahera, a traditional Sri Lankan procession filled with colour, culture, and a wonderful atmosphere. The sight immediately caught my attention, and for a while, I stopped to enjoy the moment.
There is something special about seeing a Perahera unexpectedly. The traditional decorations, people gathered along the roadside, and the lively atmosphere create a memorable experience. Since I had my phone camera with me, I took a few photographs so that I could preserve those moments and share them with others.
What began as an ordinary evening trip to buy vegetables and fruits turned into a much more memorable experience. Sometimes, the simplest journeys give us unexpected moments that are worth remembering.📸
