Greetings, dear friends at Worldmappin—welcome to my blog. It’s been a while since I’ve stopped by this community; I have so much to share, but my time is limited, and a few setbacks have kept me from being more active. Right in the midst of those difficult days, following the earthquake that struck La Guaira and Caracas on June 24, I had the opportunity to visit a church I’d been meaning to see. It was open that day; there was a small table in the garden area where some staff members from the church were collecting donations for those affected by the earthquake.
After greeting them and arranging another visit to help with supplies, they invited me inside to see the church dedicated to Our Lady of Altagracia. Unlike other shrines, the Church of Our Lady of Altagracia is not very large. It features a garden area and small statues that decorate the exterior with great subtlety. The well-maintained green areas lead up to a structure that was inaugurated in 1995, featuring a modern architectural design and a bell tower so tall that it rises from the building in a sober and modest manner. Initially, this church was located at what is now Plaza Bermúdez; however, after suffering irreparable damage from several earthquakes that struck the city, it was demolished and rebuilt on Mariño Street in the city of Cumaná, Sucre State, Venezuela.
As I entered the church after climbing a few flights of stairs, I was struck by the soft light that filled the entire space; it created a beautiful atmosphere, somewhat like candlelight. I admit that the photos didn’t turn out very well in the low light—my phone at the time didn’t perform well in dimly lit places—but I selected the best ones from the gallery for this post. Directly ahead is a large stained-glass window depicting the Virgin of Altagracia with her arms outstretched, rendered in very intense and striking colors.
On the left, there is a display board and some images—some familiar, others less so—including El Nazareno, a Virgin Mary, “La Dolorosa,” José Gregorio Hernández, and a cross. Several symbols can be seen on the wall in panels, whose meanings refer to the Stations of the Cross.
The church features a simple, very urban architectural design that blends in with the city’s style, with cinder block walls, a granite floor, and wooden pews. The ceiling has an avant-garde design with a geodesic structure, consisting of several interconnected metal beams in white with triangular shapes. The lighting is a combination of natural and artificial light that creates a welcoming atmosphere.
I found two beautiful places: the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, a special and sacred place—a marble presbytery where parishioners say their prayers—as well as a space dedicated to Our Lady of Valle and Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The materials change as we approach the altar. First, a red carpet leads the way to the space set aside for the Eucharist, which is quite spacious. In that area, the floor is made of wood and features several prominent elements crafted from marble.
There are no stained-glass windows inside the church—only the central one, featuring the extraordinary image of the Virgin of Altagracia, and a few large windows that let in natural light. It’s always wonderful to discover new places and share our experiences.

Saludos estimados amigos de Worldmappin, bienvenidos a mi blog. Tiempo sin pasar por esta comunidad, con muchas cosas que contar pero con un tiempo limitado y algunos percances que me han impedido estar más activa. Justo en aquellos días difíciles, después de terremoto que ocurrió el pasado 24 de junio en la Guaira y en Caracas, tuve la oportunidad de conocer una iglesia que tenía en mente visitar. Ese día estaba abierta, había una mesita en el área del jardín con algunos trabajadores de ese recinto eclesiástico para recibir donativos para los afectados del sismo.
Después de saludarlos y acordar una nueva visita para colaborar con los insumos, me invitaron a pasar para que conociera la iglesia en Honor a la Virgen de Altagracia. A diferencia de otros santuarios, la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia no es tan grande. Cuenta con un espacio para jardinería y estatuillas que decoran el espacio exterior con suma sutileza. Las áreas verdes bien cuidadas preceden a una estructura que fue inaugurada en el año 1995 con un diseño arquitectónico de estilo moderno y un campanario tan alto que sobresale de manera sobria y modesta de su construcción. Inicialmente, este templo tuvo su sede en la actual Plaza Bermúdez, no obstante, al sufrir daños irreparables por varios terremotos que azotaron a la ciudad, fue demolido y edificado en la calle Mariño de la ciudad de Cumaná, estado Sucre, Venezuela.
Al ingresar a la iglesia luego de subir algunas escalinatas, llamó mi atención la luz tenue que invade toda su estancia, el ambiente se torna bonito, algo así como a la luz de las velas. Confieso que las fotos con la baja iluminación no quedaron muy bien, mi teléfono de ese entonces no hace méritos en lugares con insuficiente luz, pero elegí lo mejor de la galería para esta publicación. De frente, se halla un gran vitral con la imagen de la virgen de Altagracia con los brazos extendidos, en tonos muy intensos y llamativos.
A la izquierda, se encuentra una cartelera y algunas imágenes ya conocidas y otras no tanto, El Nazareno, una virgen, “La Dolorosa”, José Gregorio Hernández y una cruz. Se observan algunos símbolos en la pared en recuadros cuyo significado se refiere a las estaciones del Viacrucis.
La iglesia cuenta con un diseño arquitectónico sencillo, muy urbano, adaptado al estilo de ciudad, con paredes de bloques, piso de granito y bancas de madera. El techo posee un diseño vanguardista, de estructura geodésica, compuesto por varias vigas interconectadas entre sí, de material metálico y formas triangulares en color blanco La iluminación es una combinación de luz natural y artificial que propician un ambiente acogedor.
Encontré dos lugares hermosos, el Santísimo Sacramento del Altar, un lugar especial y sagrado, un presbiterio de mármol donde los feligreses hacen sus oraciones, además de un espacio dedicado a la Virgen de Valle y la Virgen de la Inmaculada concepción.

Los materiales cambian cuando nos dirigimos al altar. Primeramente, una alfombra roja conduce el camino hacia el espacio destinado a la eucaristía, es bastante amplio. En esa zona, el piso es de madera y cuenta con algunos elementos destacados elaborados en mármol.
No se observan vitrales distribuidos dentro de la iglesia, solo el central con la extraordinaria imagen de la Virgen de Altagracia y también algunos ventanales que dejan infiltrar la luz natural. Siempre resulta maravilloso conocer nuevos lugares y contar nuestra experiencia.
