Hello everyone. In my last post about books, I mentioned how I used to spend time in the school library as a child and enjoyed various books, which I would take home over the holidays or on weekends. I’ve already talked about one of them, and today it’s the turn of one of my absolute favorites—arguably the one I loved the most. I was quite sad when I could no longer find it in the library, as I never saw a physical copy of it again. However, I didn't forget it; it is a book based on a melody we have all sung at some point, though this version is more elaborate and beautiful. That is why, today, I’m sharing my thoughts on Mambrú se fue a la guerra.
Hola a todos. En mi último post sobre libros, hablé de que de niña pasaba en la biblioteca de la escuela y que me gustaban varios libros, los cuales llevaba a casa en vacaciones o fines de semana. Ya comenté acerca de uno y hoy le toca el turno a uno de mis favoritos; podría decirse que el que más me había gustado y que cuando ya no lo encontré en la biblioteca me sentí bastante triste porque no volví a verlo en físico. Sin embargo, no lo olvidé, ya que es un libro cuya melodía todos alguna vez cantamos, pero que en esta versión es más extendida y bonita. Por eso, el día de hoy les daré mi opinión acerca de "Mambrú se fue a la guerra".
Illustrated by Gloria Calderón and published by Ediciones Ekaré in 1996—winner of the Fundalibro Award for Best Children's Book of the Year (1996) and an honorable mention in the NOMA Illustration Contest (1996)—this book tells, in the style of a song, the sad story of a duke known as Mambrú. After falling in love, he is summoned to war on his wedding day and must leave his wife to fulfill his duty; he tragically dies in the conflict, meeting a sorrowful end. All of this is conveyed through beautiful linocut artwork (colored with watercolor) that gives the book a distinctive style befitting the story's era.
Con ilustraciones de Gloria Calderón y publicado por la editorial Ediciones Ekare en el año 1996, y ganador de los premios "Premio Fundalibro al Mejor Libro Infantil del Año (1996)" y "mención en el Concurso NOMA de Ilustración (1996)", es un libro que nos narra a modo de canción la triste historia de un duque conocido como Mambru, el cual, luego de enamorarse, el día de su boda es convocado a la guerra y este debe abandonar a su esposa para cumplir con su deber, lastimosamente muriendo en la guerra y teniendo un triste final, todo a través de un bello arte visual de linóleo (coloreado con acuarela) que le da un sello distintivo y acorde con la época de la historia.
Personally, I like the fact that it is adapted to feature cats; this makes it visually appealing and eye-catching—qualities that drew me to the book when I was young. Beyond its colorful nature, it is captivating for any child; even a non-reader would be completely enthralled just by looking at it, thanks to the powerful impact of the vibrant illustrations.
Personalmente, me gusta el hecho de que esté adaptada a gatos, por lo que lo hace lindo visualmente y llamativo, siendo esta una de las cosas que me atrajo cuando vi este libro de pequeña. Además de lo colorido que siento, es un enganche para cualquier niño que, incluso si no leyera, con solo ver estaría muy bien embelezado, esto por el gran impacto que tienen estas ilustraciones con colores vibrantes.
A fascinating aspect of this book—and of the subject itself—is that the story goes beyond the familiar populist lore surrounding "Mambrú." It reveals the figure's true origins: rather than being merely the invention of a nursery rhyme or children's song, the character stems from the real-life Duke of Marlborough. French soldiers—his adversaries—composed comic verses to mock him and celebrate his supposed death; finding his name difficult to pronounce, they adapted it into the form we now know as "Mambrú." Yet, since the Duke was not actually dead, these verses eventually resurfaced—notably at wakes—and gained such immense popularity that they were translated and spread, evolving into the version known today.
Algo muy curioso de este libro y de Ensi es el hecho de que este cuenta más allá de lo que estamos acostumbrados a escuchar del populismo en torno a Mambrú; es el hecho de su origen, donde, más que una simple creación de una historia o canción infantil, en su tiempo e historia real se origina con el duque Marlborough, al que sus amigos soldados franceses, a modo de burlarse de él, crearon versos cómicos para celebrar su supuesta muerte y que, por lo difícil de su nombre, lo fueron adaptando hasta el nombre que conocemos como Mambrú. Sin embargo, el duque no estaba muerto, por lo que de alguna forma estos versos pasaron con el tiempo a ser redescubiertos en velorios y tomaron tanta popularidad que se tradujeron y extendieron a lo que actualmente conocemos.
While the story told in this book is undeniably sad, that very quality makes it compelling; in fact, it was a classroom favorite during our library sessions—a simple yet effective way to capture children's attention and leave a lasting impression. Although it is a simple book, I feel it holds great value; it doesn't need much to stand out, nor does it feel overly linear or complex to grasp. Physically, it is compact and pleasant to hold and read, so I truly enjoyed it. I would still love to own a physical copy today because I like it so much—and, of course, I still adore the kitten-themed design. Y aunque sí bien en sí la versión de la historia que se narra en este libro es triste, hace que sea llamativa, y justamente era de los libros que más se usaban en clases cuando estábamos en la biblioteca, por lo que era una forma de llamar la atención de niños sin tanta cosa, y que se sabía que quedaría bien metida en la mente por un buen tiempo. Así mismo, siento que aunque es un libro simple, posee un gran valor; este no necesita mucho para destacar ni tampoco verse demasiado lineal para ser aprendido y entendido. Así como en físico, suele ser bastante compacto y agradable de leer y manipular, por lo que, bueno, lo disfruté mucho; incluso aún actualmente quiero volver a tenerlo en físico porque me gusta mucho y, claro, su diseño en torno a gatitos me sigue encantando, por lo que, bueno, sin más que decir y esperando sea de su agrado, muchas gracias por leer.
