Welcome, Hivers, to this new post. A few weeks ago, I mentioned that it was time for me to go back to work, and between all the appointments and adjusting my schedule, I’ve had a hard time sitting down to write. In fact, I’m typing with one hand while feeding my baby melon with the other, a scene you can probably imagine, ha ha ha.
Going back to work brought up a lot of feelings, ranging from guilt to relief. Part of me felt guilty about leaving her, even if just for a few hours, because for months I’d been with her practically 24/7. And another part felt at peace, because I could free myself up a bit and work.
The first day was awful for both of us. My mom offered to help me take care of her, so with a heavy heart, I left her with her bottles full of breast milk that morning. I went to work crying, until I calmed down a bit and was able to get through the day’s tasks. However, we ran into a problem: my baby wouldn’t take the bottle. There was no way she would take it, and she cried a lot, according to what my mom told me, until one of her coworkers managed to distract her and she took a little from the bottle.

For reference, I managed to pump 8 ounces of milk over the previous two days, and she only drank two. A process that, by the way, was not at all easy, because I even had to buy another pump, an electric one, since the manual one wouldn’t extract any milk, if anything, less than a quarter of an ounce.
When I left work, my mom was already waiting for me with my daughter nearby. As soon as I saw her, I picked up my baby, who had started crying again, and put her to my breast; that was the only way to calm her down and get us both settled. After that, everything was easier, even though I had to pump milk when I got home because my breasts were sore.
The following Tuesday we had our 6-month checkup, and we got the go-ahead to start complementary feeding. So far, it’s been almost two weeks of getting used to making her meals and letting her try different things. However, I haven’t been able to give her much variety yet, but she has tried: melon, apple, banana, carrot, squash, plantain, meat, and chicken, seasoned with onion, garlic, and cilantro.

The pediatric gastroenterologist who treats us gave us the green light to start giving her eggs, oats, and citrus fruits as soon as she turns 7 months old. Also, she lifted the restriction I had been under, due to my daughter’s cow’s milk protein allergy, I hadn’t eaten any dairy products or derivatives for a month, so starting now, for one month, I can eat buffalo cheese.
Now I can go to work with much more peace of mind; I’ve left her with my mom, my dad, and even my husband. She eats very little, but she eats her snacks and drinks her bottles of milk, even if it’s just a little, which puts my mind at ease. With God’s help, between now and when she starts daycare, she’ll get used to all her meals and eat on her own schedule.
For now, we’ll keep gradually getting her used to not nursing as much and eating more. We have good days and days when it’s tough, but we’re getting there. For now, I’ll sign off, and if you have any recommendations for complementary feeding, I’ll be reading them. Until the next post.
