It’s Day Nine, and I’m continuing to watch those horror movies I should have seen long ago but never did. Through this process, I’ve realized just how varied horror tastes are; no two "Top 10" lists look alike. I’ve been keeping an eye out for the few titles that do overlap, as that—I assume—is a sign of a quality film. Talk to Me (directed by the Philippou brothers) is the first movie I’ve watched this October that dives headfirst into the paranormal and demonic possession, yet it has a unique quality: I found it to be an incredibly sad film. That reaction stems from the fact that the story is driven by the protagonists' unresolved traumas and personal struggles. Just how far can a mother spiral after losing a child? One answer to that question can be found in this film.

When I say it is a sad movie, it is because it begins as a family drama that gradually transforms into something chilling. It centers on two stepsiblings, Andy and Piper, who are left orphaned after their father's death. Andy is a 17-year-old who suffered childhood troubles that left him somewhat traumatized, while his stepsister is a younger, very sweet, and affectionate girl who is visually impaired. The two are very close—loving and supporting one another—so they are placed in the same foster home. There, they are taken in by Laura (Sally Hawkins), a mother struggling to cope after the death of her daughter, Cathy, who drowned in the home's swimming pool. The grief she is experiencing is leading her down a truly dark and sinister path.

It is worth noting that another child, Oliver, lives in the house. He displays such strange and erratic behavior that simply being near him can be truly unsettling. Gradually, we begin to see very odd and completely inappropriate behavior from Laura; what initially appears to be an adjustment to a new life with Andy and Piper morphs into uncomfortable situations—and eventually, a genuine nightmare. What you need to understand is that this poor woman—for deep down, she is a mother who never got over the loss of her daughter—is simply trying to bring Cathy back. How? Well, that is where the film’s occult elements come into play. Mind you, I am not justifying Laura’s character; grief turned her into a terrible person capable of the unimaginable just to bring her daughter back. The film delves into the occult, cults, and pagan rituals—leading to supernatural horror—but it also incorporates body horror, the kind that makes your skin crawl.

Regarding the latter, it is exceptionally well executed. There are scenes that are quite graphic and explicit, where bodily mutilation and injury take center stage. Visually, it is also well crafted; the character of Oliver is a sight to behold—making the viewer feel uncomfortable simply by appearing on screen is no easy feat. While the paranormal usually implies things that are frightening, that isn't quite the case here; there are a few striking moments, but the prevailing mood is one of discomfort—the very kind I mentioned earlier. It features the typical tropes of possession, complete with the familiar physical contortions. Added to this is the "human" element, stemming from what the characters have endured—grief, domestic violence, and bullying. All these factors imbue the film with a deeply sorrowful atmosphere, one that is fully realized in its ending.

Given the heavy subject matter, the performances are paramount. I truly want to highlight the entire cast; at various points in the story, they had to draw on real skill to remain convincing and convey the suffering, fear, and full range of emotions their characters experience. However, if I had to single out one performance, Jonah Wren Phillips’s work—especially considering he is just a child—is nothing short of extraordinary. Portraying a character with the traits seen in this film is incredibly complex; actors have faced personal struggles after filming roles far less demanding than this one. It is, without a doubt, a complex character. And, of course, there is Sally Hawkins; while not typically known for horror films, here she goes beyond mere scares to portray a state of profound, unsettling disturbance. Ultimately, this is a great horror movie with added layers that give the plot greater depth and even a touch of sensitivity. The ending is exactly that: sad. It represents the final undoing of a person consumed by a deep abyss. Highly recommended—it has it all: demons, gore, and drama. I’ve included the trailer here; the film runs just over an hour and a half.
