Making movies based on video games has become quite profitable in recent times, especially when the resulting films turn out to be genuinely good watches. The Five Nights at Freddy's (FNAF) franchise is renowned for its pure horror roots, so adapting it for the big screen seemed like a sure-fire success. The first installment came out back in 2023, and the second arrived last year; a third entry is expected next year. Yet, for some strange reason, I hadn't caught up with the story until last night, when I finally decided to sit down and continue the saga. I enjoyed the first one, and I have to say I liked the second one too; both deliver the goods, featuring stories that blend children, paranormal activity, gore, and some truly unsettling animatronics.
Hacer películas basadas en videojuegos desde hace un tiempo se ha convertido en algo muy rentable y más cuando estas terminan siendo productos bastante buenos para ver. La franquicia de FNA es una de las más conocidas por ser un titulo de terror puro por lo que ser llevada al cine suponía casi un éxito asegurado. La primera entrega de esto salió por allá en el 2023 y esta segunda el año pasado. La tercera entrega se espera para el año que viene. Así que si, por alguna extraña razón nunca me había puesto al día con esta historia hasta la noche de ayer que decidí sentarme a darle continuidad a esta trama. La primera me gustó, esta segunda debo decir que también, las dos cumplen muy bien porque son historias que involucran niños, actividad paranormal, gore y unos muñecos animados bien perturbadores.
This second installment takes place approximately a year after the events of the first film. Do you need to see the first one to understand this one? Yes, I think it is somewhat necessary. We find Mike (Josh Hutcherson) finally living happily with his sister, Abby. To provide some context: she became close friends with the animatronics in the first movie, but things happened, and now they aren't functioning quite as they should. The events at the famous Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria were so dramatic that the town latched onto the story, spawning local urban legends. Abby is a sensitive soul, so one night she decides to visit her friends again—unaware that this will trigger a new wave of events affecting her, her brother, their acquaintances, and the town itself.
Esta segunda parte se desarrolla un año después, aproximadamente, de los sucesos de la primera película. Deberían de verla para poder entender esta? - si, creo que es un poco necesario. Tenemos a Mike (Josh Hutcherson) viviendo finalmente feliz con su hermana Abby. Para que tengan un poco de contexto ella se hizo muy amiga de estos animatrónicos en la primera película pero pasaron cosas y ahora ellos ya no están funcionando como deberían. Fue tal lo que terminó pasando en la famosa pizzería Freddy Fazbear que el pueblo se alimentó de esta historia y crearon sus leyendas urbanas locales. Abby es muy sensible por lo que una noche decide visitar de nuevo a sus amigos sin saber que sería el comienzo de una nueva ola de acontecimientos tanto para ella y su hermano como para sus conocidos y el propio pueblo.
This second installment also reveals the true origin of the tragedies that took place in the 80s—because, yes, the story is based on terrible events at that pizzeria, but we finally learn how it all began, allowing us to better understand the narrative. It is a story—as I noted in the title—steeped in hatred and resentment, involving children and parents who failed in their duty to care for and protect them. Out of this rage, a new character emerges: The Puppet, who plays a major role here. Watching this sequel, I felt it was somewhat more traumatic; the issues and events stem from a more personal place—from feelings and insecurities, such as the fear of being unable to overcome past traumas. I believe this shifts the focus away from the gore and violence seen in the first film. Mind you, those elements are still present, but to a lesser degree; the tension arises from different sources.
Esta segunda entrega también nos muestra el verdadero origen de las tragedias que ocurrieron en los años 80, porque si, todo esto se basa en cosas terribles que pasaron en dicha pizzería, pero el inicio de todo es lo que se nos termina revelando para así entender un poco mejor la historia. Una historia que tal y como digo en el titulo está llena de odio y resentimiento porque involucra a niños y a padres que no hicieron muy bien su trabajo: cuidar y proteger. Con toda esta rabia nace un nuevo personaje, La Marioneta, la cual será una de las grandes protagonistas acá. La sensación que me dio al ver esta segunda parte es que es un poco más traumática en el sentido de que los problemas y los hechos que pasan vienen de un lugar más personal, de sentimientos e inseguridades como el miedo de no superar traumas del pasado; creo que todo esto desplaza un poco todo el gore y la violencia que vimos en la primera. Que ojo, acá la sigue habiendo pero en menor medida, la tensión viene de otros lados.
Since it’s a horror movie, the question arises: is it scary? Personally, I didn't find it frightening, though there is certainly palpable tension and suspense. The animatronics are deeply unsettling and macabre—especially The Puppet, whose abilities include possessing people. The horror here has several facets: there is a paranormal element (since the events are driven by the spirits of children), as well as a more violent style of horror—not quite a slasher, but one that features blood and deaths. It offers a bit of everything. To be honest—and I always mention this because it’s a good gauge—I wasn't bored, though the film does take a little while to get going. The reason is that the beginning establishes the characters' situations and the backstory of past events; once that context is set, the plot kicks into gear.
Al ser una película de terror hay que hacerse la pregunta, da miedo? - personalmente no me dio miedo pero si que es verdad que hay una tensión y suspenso muy evidente, estos animatrónicos son muy perturbadores y macabros, en especial La Marioneta que una de sus habilidades es como poseer a las personas. El tema acá es que hay varias aristas dentro de lo que es el terror, una es lo paranormal que si hay un poco de eso ya que al final son espíritus de niños los que mueven todo y la segunda es ese terror violento que no llega a ser slasher pero en el que si vemos sangre y muertes. Hay de todo un poco. La verdad es que como siempre voy a decir, porque me parece importante y es un buen termómetro, no me aburrí, pero si se tarda un poco en arrancar. El tema es que al principio nos dan el contexto de como están los personajes y todo el trasfondo de lo sucedido en el pasado; sabiendo esto es que se da todo para que la trama comience.
This isn't a film that really lends itself to appreciating the acting. I say this because nothing here stands out; there are moments of horror and drama, but nothing particularly impressive. The cast is largely the same as in the previous film, with the addition of a couple of—honestly—insignificant supporting characters. It is the kind of movie where the story matters more than the characters themselves, though there are exceptions, of course. The ending is clearly open-ended, as a third installment is already in the works; the story doesn't wrap up yet, leaving many loose ends and unresolved issues from the first film. It is a very typical horror movie, yet it avoids being over-the-top or overly graphic on screen. The experience is much better and more effective if you watch the first film before this one. It runs for just over an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below so those unfamiliar with these animatronics can get to know them.
No es una película que se da mucho para la apreciación de actuaciones. Esto lo digo porque acá no hay nada que destaque, hay sus momentos de terror y drama pero nada muy impresionante. El cast es casi el mismo al de la película anterior con la incorporación de un par de personajes secundarios poco relevantes la verdad. Es de esos films en los que vale más la historia que las propias personas, con sus excepciones claro está. Su final es claramente abierto porque se sabe que la tercera entrega viene por lo que la historia no cierra aún, quedan muchos cabos sueltos y cosas de la propia primera película que todavía no se resuelven del todo. Es una película muy típica de terror pero sin ser exagerada ni muy fuerte en pantalla. Si ven la primera y después esta la experiencia es mucho mejor y más efectiva. Dura poco más de hora y media.
