Almost 40 years ago—in the late 80s—Bloodsport premiered, becoming one of the most iconic and defining films for a whole generation. Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and a young Forest Whitaker, this martial arts movie is undoubtedly a standout in the genre; even today, if I were to look for something to watch, I would happily choose it without a second thought. Countless films in this vein have been released over the years, yet few measure up—not necessarily due to cinematic quality, but because of what the original represents and the nostalgia attached to it. Lion Fist, a film released just recently, aims to emulate that classic in both substance and style; the question is whether it fails in the attempt or actually manages to be a watchable movie. For me, the answer is quite clear.
Hace casi 40 años, a finales de los 80, se estrenó una de las películas más referenciales e icónicas para una generación, "Bloodsport". Este film dedicado a las artes marciales y protagonizado por Jean-Claude Van Damme y un joven Forest Whitaker sin duda ha sido de las grandes películas del género, incluso si hoy en día la buscara para verla sin pensarlo la vería feliz y contento. A lo largo de los años siguientes han salido muchísimas más películas de este estilo pero pocas le llegan a esa, no por lo buena sino por lo que representa y por la nostalgia. Lion Fist, este film estrenado hace días, pretende ser algo parecido a aquel clásico tanto en su fondo como en su forma, la cosa es que si fracasa en el intento o por lo menos es algo que se puede mirar. Y para mi la respuesta es bastante clara.
Joe is a man who spent five years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. In prison, he was a calm, respected, and honorable guy—the same man he is now that he's free. He leaves prison hoping to rebuild his life, but receives news that shatters all his plans and stability: his son has a brain tumor and needs a $50,000 operation. The boy's mother—a woman consumed by drugs and poor choices—starts pressuring Joe for the money, leading him to wonder if it’s all a ruse and if she actually wants the cash for drugs. To make matters worse, she is involved with a guy (the worst actor I have ever seen) who is a drug lord and leaves a lot to be desired as both a man and a human being.
Joe es un hombre que estuvo preso 5 años por un crimen que no cometió. En la cárcel fue un tipo tranquilo, respetado y honorable; el mismo hombre que es en libertad. Sale buscando reorganizar su vida pero recibe una noticia que le tumba todo plan y estabilidad: su hijo necesita una operación de 50 mil dólares, tiene un tumor cerebral. La madre, una mujer consumida por las drogas y las malas decisiones, es la que comienza a presionar al bueno de Joe por el dinero a lo que él empieza a dudar un poco sobre si todo aquello será un teatro y en realidad el dinero lo busca para las drogas. No conforme con eso ella está de pareja con un tipo, (el peor actor que he visto en mi vida), que es un capo de la droga y que como hombre y persona también dejan mucho que desear.
Time is running out, and he needs the money. Joe learns that an underground martial arts tournament is taking place in the city, offering a $100,000 prize. He certainly has the motivation—he’s doing it for his son—but he needs to hone his skills, so he seeks out Master Wu for training. Wu is the classic tough, taciturn coach who can take you down with just two moves learned at a temple in China. And make no mistake, this is the real deal—the martial art he practices is the famous Wushu. From this point on, Joe’s journey to improve and win the tournament begins. Running parallel to this is a drug-related subplot that adds a touch of depth to the film—much like the police storyline in Bloodsport. Look, I get that these kinds of movies don't demand top-tier acting—after all, it’s mostly about being in shape and knowing how to move on screen—but the casting for some of the roles was pathetic. And yes, I’m talking about Brice Akuesson; I’ve since read that he isn't even an actor.
El tiempo corre y necesita el dinero. Joe se entera que en la ciudad habrá un torneo de esos clandestinos de artes marciales el cual tiene como premio 100 mil dólares. Motivación no le falta, aquello lo hace por su hijo, pero si necesita pulir habilidades y para eso busca entrenarse con el maestro Wu, el típico entrenador duro y de pocas palabras que te derriba con dos movimientos que aprendió en un templo en China. Ojo, todo esto es real como el hecho de que el arte marcial que maneja es el famoso Wushu. A partir de acá comienza el camino de Joe para mejorar y lograr ganar el torneo. En paralelo hay una sub trama con el tema de las drogas que le da una ligera profundidad a la película; justamente igual que en Bloodsport con aquel par de policías. A ver, yo entiendo que este tipo de films no requieran un nivel de actuacion supremo porque al final es solo tener condición y saber moverse en pantalla, pero el casting que hicieron con algunos actores fue patético. Y si, hablo de Brice Akuesson, que leyendo veo que no es ni siquiera actor.
Even though the story focuses on the fights, these movies still require at least a minimum level of acting, and that guy ruins the entire experience whenever he appears on screen. The structure is far too similar to Bloodsport—the background music, the relationship between Joe and his master, the tournament setup featuring fighters of various styles, and even the camera shots are very much alike. I realize many people haven't seen that classic, but those of us who have can clearly see the intention to mimic it. The fight scenes range from decent to mediocre. Action actors need to know how to fall and take a "hit" properly, yet here, there are noticeable flaws in specific instances. Of course, not all the fights are that bad; there are some quite decent, enjoyable ones, but overall, everything is very basic.
Por más que la historia se centre en las peleas, hasta en estas películas hace falta un mínimo de actuacion y ese tipo daña toda la experiencia cada vez que aparece en pantalla. La estructura es demasiado parecido a Bloodsport, la musicalización de fondo, la relación entre Joe y su maestro, la estructura del torneo con peleadores de mucho estilos, hasta las tomas son muy similares. Entiendo que muchas personas no hayan visto este clásico pero para los que si nos dimos cuenta que la intención de ser algo parecido es muy evidente. Las escenas de peleas son decentes tirando a regular. Los actores de acción tienen que saber hasta caer y recibir los "golpes"; acá en casos muy concretos se ven fallos. Claro, no todas las peleas son así de malas, hay una bastante decentes y que se disfrutan pero en lineas generales todo es muy básico.
The film aims for a solid plot featuring a couple of likable, endearing characters—in fact, the master himself turns out to be one of them. The master's daughter acts as a sort of bridge between Joe's sensitive and violent sides, providing balance to the whole story; there’s also a good friend whose bond is forged in loyalty and honor. I won't dwell on the acting—it’s not really that kind of movie—though I would have liked a bit more depth from certain characters. So, is it an insult or a tribute? A director and their team always aim to create something entertaining and cool, even if it doesn't always work out. I should clarify that the "tribute" angle is just my own theory, based on the strong resemblance between the two films. That said, I think the quality could have been better; I enjoy these kinds of movies for the punches, the blood, and the mixed martial arts. While this film has all of that, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. You might watch it and end up liking it, though—after all, taste is subjective. That’s why I encourage you to give it a watch. It runs for exactly an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer here.
La película trata de tener una buena trama con par de personajes suaves y entrañables, de hecho el mismo maestro termina siendo uno de ellos. La hija del maestro es una especie de catalizador entre el lado sensible y el violento de Joe, es la que da el equilibrio a todo y también está el buen amigo producto de la lealtad y el honor. No voy a hablar de las actuaciones porque no hace falta, no es un film para eso pero si me hubiese gustado ver un poco más de nivel con ciertos personajes. Entonces, es un insulto o un tributo? - la intención de un director y su equipo siempre será la de hacer algo entretenido y cool solo que a veces no funciona. Aclaro, todo esto del tributo es un invento mío por el gran parecido que hay entre las dos películas. Dicho esto, creo que pudo haber sido algo de mejor calidad, estas películas me gusta verlas porque son golpes, sangre, artes marciales mixtas; acá hay de todo eso pero no llegó a cumplir mis expectativas. A lo mejor tu las ves y te termina gustando, los gustos son subjetivos. Es por eso que te invito a que la veas. Hora y media justa. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.
