Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

It is October 3rd, the third day of "spooky season." I generally try to avoid movies involving animals because they almost always end tragically after the viewer has formed an emotional bond with them; watching a pet die is tough. So, I took a chance on this film, knowing it was a title that had generated quite a buzz when it was released. Fortunately, that emotional attachment doesn't happen here because everything moves so quickly—at least, I didn't feel that bond—which allowed me to fully enjoy the movie. It delivers horror and suspense, featuring plenty of blood and violence caused by an animal out of control. For fans of this genre, I think it’s a great film that will keep any viewer entertained and on the edge of their seat.

The protagonist of this story is Ben, a domesticated chimpanzee who is part of the family. Highly intelligent, he was taught to communicate with everyone by the mother of the household—a linguistics professor—and was always affectionate and sociable. One night, everything changes: Ben is bitten by a rabid animal, causing his behavior to rapidly deteriorate. Meanwhile, Lucy, one of the daughters, returns home for the holidays with two friends. Her father, her sister, and Ben are waiting there to spend a few days together. Once everyone is gathered, the nightmare begins. One of the symptoms of rabies is hydrophobia (a fear of water); Ben begins to exhibit this, raising alarm among everyone—not to mention the radical physical transformation he also undergoes.

Once his transformation is complete and he clearly ceases to be Ben—that affectionate, beloved creature—the family's reality turns into a nightmare they must struggle to survive. Imagine facing a chimpanzee—an animal already possessing strength far superior to a human's—now driven by the rabies virus; it is a recipe for absolute disaster and chaos. The film is exactly what you would expect; I was surprised by the level of violence and, above all, its graphic nature. There are truly explicit close-up scenes showing skin, hair, and even bone being torn away, as well as brutal beatings and body parts being crushed with stones; the wide variety of deaths certainly makes for a visually striking film. As a horror movie, it succeeds in this regard: Ben’s aggressive nature makes him a lethal threat, and his attacks are fueled by the deep, primal rage caused by the virus—it is as if the chimpanzee were possessed.

It is not that the bond is non-existent; rather, it is obliterated by the former pet's horrific behavior. While it may seem at times that the creature recognizes its owners, that recognition lasts only seconds; in reality, it is completely out of its mind. It is worth noting that a real primate was never used; what we see on screen is an actor in a suit enhanced by CGI to create the terrifying appearance of the infected Ben—and indeed, there are moments where his look is truly frightening and imposing. Beyond the film's obvious violence, it also incorporates elements of suspense, as you never know what might happen next or where the creature might appear; there are moments of intense tension that successfully break through the screen—and the fourth wall—to reach the audience. The plot holds few surprises and doesn't lend itself to major twists, as the premise is simple: survival. It is, in essence, a survival thriller.

The acting is exactly what you’d expect. Personally, I wasn't familiar with the cast—I didn't recognize any of the actresses—so I’m basing my opinion solely on what I saw here. A horror film of this type requires drama, tragedy, desperation, and anguish, and we certainly get that here. Granted, it’s handled somewhat superficially—nothing Oscar-worthy—but it works well. The ending is also predictable; nothing happens throughout the film to suggest a different outcome, so there are no surprises. Ultimately, this is a very good horror movie that offers everything a fan could want: it’s violent, bloody, and full of suspense and anticipation, with great visuals and very explicit content. If you enjoy the genre, don't hesitate to watch it; you certainly won't be bored. It takes a little while to get going, but once it does, it’s unstoppable. It runs for an hour and a half—an ideal runtime. I’ve included the trailer below so you can take a look and decide to give it a watch.

Primate shows how terrifying the concept of 'the family pet turned into a nightmare' can be 🙂
