It is October 4th, marking the fourth day of discussing horror during this spooky season. Cuando acecha la maldad (When Evil Lurks) is the Spanish title of this Argentine film; surprisingly, despite it being a modern classic of the genre, I had never had the chance to watch it until now. Many might assume that because it is a Latin American film, it lacks quality, but let me tell you: this title is one of the most disturbing, horror-filled experiences you could ever witness. It is a story that has it all—terror, gore, violence, and a supernatural atmosphere driven by an unseen evil that wears many faces. It may sound contradictory, but once you watch it, you will understand: evil exists, and it can take any form and reach any place; all it takes is for you to feel fear and let it into your mind.
Dia 4 de octubre, cuarto día hablando de terror en esta spooky season. "Cuando acecha la maldad", así se llama en español esta película argentina que aunque parezca mentira nunca había tenido la oportunidad de ver siendo uno de los grandes clásicos modernos del género. Muchos pensarán que al ser un film latinoamericano no será bueno o de calidad, pues déjenme decirles que este titulo es de las cosas más perturbadoras y llenas de horror que ustedes pueden llegar a ver. Es una historia que lo tiene todo, tiene terror, gore, violencia y una esencia sobrenatural en la atmosfera que viene dada por una maldad que no se ve pero que tiene muchas caras. Esto puede sonar contradictorio pero cuando la vean entenderán: el mal existe y como tal puede optar por convertirse en cualquier forma y llegar a cualquier sitio solo basta con que tengas miedo y lo dejes entrar a tu mente.
We are in the remote rural towns of Argentina, where life moves at a much slower pace than in the cities. Pedro and Jimi are brothers living in a country home; one night, they realize something is wrong when they hear distant gunshots and, upon investigating, discover a corpse. Following the trail leads them to a house where they encounter something no one wants to find: an embichado—or encarnado. In Argentina, this term refers to a body possessed and eventually consumed by rot due to a malevolent entity, a demon. There are many beliefs regarding how to handle such situations, involving specific rituals and rules that must be followed to prevent the evil from spreading; if not executed correctly, the consequences can be both deadly and terrifying.
Estamos en los pueblos rurales profundos de Argentina en donde las cosas van a un ritmo mucho más lento que en las ciudades. Pedro y Jimi son dos hermanos que viven en una de estas casas en el campo y que una noche descubren que algo no anda bien, escuchan disparos a lo lejos y cuando van a revisar se consiguen un cadáver. Al seguir las pistas los llevan a una casa en donde encuentran lo que nadie quiere encontrarse, un embichado o encarnado. En Argentina se les llama así a los cuerpos que están poseídos y eventualmente podridos por una entidad maligna, un demonio. Existen muchas creencias en torno al como manejar estas situaciones, hay rituales y reglas que se deben seguir para que el mal no se propague, de no hacerse correctamente las consecuencias pueden ser mortales y terroríficas.
As might be expected, that doesn't happen; instead, they try to dispose of the body themselves, ignoring warnings from various people. They soon realize their mistake and discover that the evil is far from gone—on the contrary, it triggers a series of demonic possessions wherever they go, with the evil following them to every new location. From that point on, the siblings must confront this malevolence while trying to protect their loved ones. When defining a horror movie, I believe this film ticks every box; it is a truly comprehensive movie that, in my view, has it all: suspense, fear, revulsion and disgust, supernatural elements, and very graphic, explicit violence. Add to this the settings and the underlying context, and the result is a more-than-decent film of pure horror.
Como es de esperarse eso no sucede por lo que tratan con sus propias manos de deshacerse de dicho cuerpo ignorando las advertencias que le hacen diferentes personas. Pronto se darán cuenta del error que cometieron y comenzarán a experimentar que dicho mal está lejos de irse o desaparecer, por el contrario, iniciarán una serie de posesiones demoniacas a lo largo del camino que van recorriendo: lugar a donde van, lugar que al que llega el mal. A partir de acá los hermanos tendrán que hacer frente a esta maldad al mismo tiempo que tratan de proteger a sus seres queridos. Cuando buscamos describir lo que sería una película de terror creo que todos los elementos que aparecen acá entrarían en esa lista y es que es un film muy completo que a mi parecer lo tiene todo. Cosas como suspenso, miedo, repulsión y asco, el factor sobrenatural y una violencia muy gráfica y explicita. Si a esto le sumamos las locaciones y el contexto que hay detrás de todo pues el resultado es una película más que decente de terror puro.
Visually, it is excellent—from the effects and the death scenes to the sheer amount of blood; it is a film that doesn't shy away from showing true horror. It certainly delivers on the gore front. It succeeds on the paranormal level, too, as the driving force behind everything is a dark entity seeking to assert itself and prove that evil is omnipresent and always triumphs. The plot works well because inexplicable events fuel the intrigue and paranoia throughout; there is no clear sense of how or where this nightmare might end. The film makes it clear that evil is in control—it is the true protagonist, and the other characters react to its movements by either fleeing or giving chase. There are scenes filled with high tension and drama, as well as moments that are deeply unsettling and shocking. For genre die-hards, this movie is a real treat; personally, I found it highly entertaining and fun to watch, over and above the quality horror experience it offers.
Lo visual es muy bueno, los efectos, las escenas en donde se dan las muertes, la abundancia de sangre; es un film que no se cohíbe en mostrar lo que puede ser el verdadero horror. Por ese lado del gore, cumple. Por el lado paranormal también porque al final lo que está detrás de todo es una fuerza oscura que está buscando imponerse y demostrar que la maldad siempre gana y está en todos lados. La trama está bien porque a lo largo de ella pasan cosas inexplicables que alimentan la intriga y la paranoia, no se sabe por donde ni de que forma se pueda resolver toda esta pesadilla. El film siempre deja claro que es la maldad la que controla todo, ella es la protagonista y según como ella se vaya moviendo los demás tratan de huir o de perseguirla. Hay escenas de mucha tensión, mucho drama, las hay incomodas e impactantes. La verdad es que para los fanáticos del género esta película es Disney, personalmente me entretuve y me divertí mucho viéndola más allá del buen horror que se experimenta.
The performances are top-notch; I feel that making this kind of movie requires the ability to fully immerse oneself in the character. One of the brothers—the one who is a father—goes through an incredible journey throughout the film; what he experiences, sees, and does is harrowing—in fact, the ending is a testament to that. Speaking of the ending, I have to say I liked it; it’s not what everyone expects, and that’s a good thing. Anyway, I’d always heard this was a must-watch movie, but I never actually got around to seeing it until yesterday. It’s excellent; I can see why people talk about it so much—to the point where I’d consider it a modern benchmark—even though it came out in 2023. It has everything you’d expect from a horror film. Highly recommended. It runs just over an hour and a half. I’ll leave the trailer here so you can check it out.
Las actuaciones están a la altura, siento que hacer este tipo de películas amerita tener la capacidad de meterse en el personaje de lleno. Uno de los hermanos, el que es papá, tiene un viaje impresionante por toda la película, lo que vive, lo que ve y lo que hace es muy duro, de hecho el final del film es una demostración de eso. Y hablando de su final debo decir que me gustó, no es el que todos esperan y eso está bien. En fin, siempre había leído que esta película era una obligación verla pero nunca lo hacía hasta ayer. Es muy buena, ya veo porque hablan tanto de ella al punto de que pensaría que es casi que una referencia moderna, es del 2023. Todo lo que se puedan imaginar en un film de terror esta lo tiene. Muy recomendada. Dura poco más de hora y media. Por acá les voy a dejar el tráiler y así le echan un vistazo.
