Adolescence: a difficult stage that we have all gone through. Most of us likely hold onto both pleasant memories and others that are not so fond; yet, beyond any negative experiences, this period is defined by immense strength, energy, and a voracious desire to take on the world. We let ourselves be carried away by these impulses—by a spirit of rebellion—which gradually fade as we enter adulthood.
The film spans four summers during the 1990s and is set in a fictional town in the south of France—a place from which most young people dream of escaping one day in search of a better life in a big city, where opportunities abound. Over the course of these four summers—1992, 1994, 1996, and 1998—the lives of the protagonists intersect, leading to events that leave an indelible mark on them.
Anthony, the story’s young protagonist, is not an easy character to like. He is an adolescent who still displays childlike behaviors: he seeks out fun and a good time, and he commits reckless acts without considering the consequences. He also experiences a sexual awakening—upon meeting the person who will become his first great love—though his feelings may not be fully reciprocated, or perhaps it is simply that the girl in question, Stephanie, is a rather complicated person.
I loved the film’s musical selection; it transported me straight back to the nineties. I remember many of the songs quite vividly—especially one by Nirvana. Setting the film during those years was a great choice: it begins in the summer of 1992 and concludes in 1998, the year France won the World Cup on home soil. Although the narrative focuses primarily on Anthony, another key character is Hacine, a young man of Maghrebian descent who lives with his grandfather in the same town. As an immigrant, he faces rejection from other local youths and ends up enduring the harshest experiences in the entire story. The conflict between the two characters triggers a series of events that cause both of them to suffer—though, in my view, Hacine fares the worst—all while a desire for revenge simmers beneath the surface. There are moments of great tension where the film’s tone seems to lean toward vengeance and crime, but when that final summer arrives, everything takes a turn.
Alcoholic parents, fear, separation, suicide, grief... the film is expansive, allowing for the exploration of various layers throughout the years the story spans. By the time that final summer arrives, the characters have grown and matured; it is then that their adolescent feuds—that hatred accumulated over years of conflict—begin to fade away.
I’ve read some negative reviews of the film, though I don’t quite understand why; perhaps it’s the runtime? I’m not sure. Personally, I quite enjoyed it. It reminded me of my own youth and the foolish things I used to do—back when I was indifferent to danger and acted on pure impulse. Damn it... what a drag it is to grow up and lose all that energy and rebelliousness.
It’s a French film that I recommend; I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
