This revenge thriller is highly entertaining. It was released nearly a decade ago, and upon rewatching it recently, I found it just as enjoyable as the first time. Although our perception of films can shift over the years, this one has aged well; it remains a solid choice for viewing. Furthermore, it centers on a revenge plot—a theme that, as I have noted on many occasions, is frequently explored in storytelling.

Revenge often begets more revenge, and so on. In the end, everyone may wind up losing, and the peace or justice one seeks might never truly be attained. While revenge is undoubtedly considered a negative thing, on some level, it can also provide a certain sense of satisfaction. It may not bring back a loved one or restore what was lost, but, in my view, it can offer a measure of peace: the certainty that the person who harmed you has, to a significant extent, received a taste of their own medicine.

What makes this story so entertaining is that, despite its violence and the gravity of its subject matter, it blends seamlessly with a specific brand of dark humor and irony. This perfect balance is precisely what makes it so compelling. I am quite fond of the humor found in certain British productions—it is a rather acerbic, biting style. The criminal characters are not exactly known for their intelligence, and even the violent scenes—given how they are staged—manage to elicit the occasional laugh.

The plot is straightforward: Donal is a farmer living in an Irish village. Though he is in his forties, he devotes his life entirely to his mother, a frail and kind-hearted elderly woman. The night she is brutally murdered by a dapper, sophisticated man, Donal sets out to track down those responsible—and, naturally, to uncover their motives. From the very beginning of the film, it is clear that someone is seeking revenge against a group of people who are now elderly. The roots of the story run deep into the past. Florence, Donal’s mother, seems like a woman incapable of harming anyone; yet, it is possible that, at some point in her youth, she made some poor choices. What did she do? What was she involved in? These questions are answered as the film unfolds—though it is also possible that she did nothing wrong, and that the truth is not what one might expect. It is worth remembering that the country in question endured an intense internal conflict between British government forces and the terrorist group, the IRA.

The subplots and the characters Donal encounters—and ends up helping—also add to the entertainment. Among them are a farmer and a somewhat clumsy young Polish man trying to rescue his sister from a human trafficking ring. These elements intertwine, adding complexity to the plot as it moves toward Donal’s ultimate goal: finding a person named Frankie, who appears to be the mastermind behind it all.

The film is available on Amazon Prime in some regions. If you’re in the mood to see a farmer—armed with a shotgun and behind the wheel of a red van—pursuing the revenge he has long craved, look it up and give it a watch. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Oh, this sounds like an exciting revenge movie with dark humor and mystery! 😍 I like that it shows how revenge can feel satisfying but also cause more problems. Donal’s story and the old secrets make the film worth watching.
